I'm dumb. On my last grill, you could see a pretty sizable flame coming out of the burners when it was lit. Webers, apparently, aren't like that. I can't see any flame at all really. So naturally, instead of waiting a minute to see if the thing gets hot,I assumed it's all broken and spent way too much time researching how to fix it.
But yeah...it heated up over 500 in just a few minutes. I think it's fine.

Best grill I've used. I used gassers all my life and the egg is king.
Would like to get a traeger solely for smoking in the next few years. Or I'll just get one of the BBQ guru fans which sort of seems like cheating.

That's a kamado-style grill, specifically, a Big Green Egg:

as shyster said, its a kamado style grill. charcoal fueled. all ceramic. you can get a heat deflector that allows you to turn it in to a smoker for indirect cooking. due to the design of it, you can get it ripping hot. i've had it around 950* when going for a sear on steaks. they are pretty pricey (mine would be about 1200 dollars with the wheelie cart and heat deflector) but you can find events and buy ones that have been used for 1 cook which i would recommend. saved about 450 bucksThe f is that bongo drum

I know next to nothing about this and have always bought the $50 cheapo from Walmart to make hamburgers, etc...
I'm in the market for a next-step-up grill (charcoal preferably) top end price would be $250.00.
Any ideas?

That's probably the only Weber I'd buy, too. Wouldn't touch their gas grills anymore.

On a neighborhood page, someone had just moved in and the previous owners left a Weber kettle and the new guy didn’t need it. Offered it for free. I snatched that up.
A $20 grate replacement and I’ve had that thing three years and it still looks new.

If I were going for a charcoal grill, I'd look hard at this for the ability to be able to smoke, too: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Char-Grille ... /206282463

theres a bunch of these - vision, akorn, chef food, etc - and all perform fine. where you start to see the differentiation is the lifetime warranty on big green egg and kamado joemy friend has this as a green egg knock off of sorts and has liked it so far

I had that same char Griller and while possible, it would need a lot of modification to successfully smoke. Like some baffles, seals, etc. There are a ton of DIYs out there that show you how.
Weber kettle is a good option too that I forgot about.

I find myself in need of adding a gas grill option to the patio. Where we live now tends to be windy a lot of the time, and I'm not keen on lighting an open fire in that environment, and having embers blowing around.
They are wildly popular, and have been for like half a century, but I'm not a fan of the Weber Kettle as a primary grill. I have one of the 22.5" jobs, but that's dedicated to duty as a pizza oven, or a plancha where I'm not working with different heat levels. If I'm cooking over an open fire, I want more flexibility in adjusting the heat.
The company Char-Griller makes a variety of different charcoal grills at or below that price point. I've owned four different models over the years, and love them all. (They are available at Lowe's, Home Depot, Amazon, Walmart, direct, etc.) The one I run now costs about $200.I know next to nothing about this and have always bought the $50 cheapo from Walmart to make hamburgers, etc...

Nice. Now go to your butcher and get some pork butt and beef brisket.
