The driver retirements have definitely had an impact. I used to love watching Junior, Gordon, Stewart, Kurt Busch, Rusty Wallace, Jarrett, etc every week. It felt like all of those guys had personalities. It just feels like the drivers nowadays are just a lot more corporate and less organic.

A lot of it is the corporate business park attitude of the drivers and crew and the fact these drivers know about as much about their cars and how they work as my dog.

Some of it is the NASCAR executives being embarrassed by their own fans and purposely driving out the Southern/Redneck ethos and side stuff.

A lot of it is the constantly changing rules and specs and the boring milquetoast tracks they added plus the dumb segment racing and the charter system.

That's a very good point. That was another thing that made NASCAR drivers easier to root for...there were a lot of good ol' boys that grew up getting their hands dirty and knew the inside and out of their vehicle. The passion is gone.

The stage racing makes the points harder to calculate than using the standings that mattered - the final results. If you want early winners, run heats. Then run a full race straight through.

I think the first Kyle Busch title was the beginning of the downfall. Why? Missed half the season but somehow still gets the title. Despite the rules requiring starting every race. Got an "exemption" that went against the spirit of the rule.

The title being settled by one race (and not on points itself) is another bomb. Can't have the Stewart vs Edwards finish that way.

Someone else said it though. The real root cause may be the Car of Tomorrow.

Daytona 500 today. I'm going to try and follow a little more closely this year. Think I'll pull for Bowman and Truex.

I'm watching today since the kids are away... Truth be told will almost surely be the last race I watch this year

I've been watching a ton of old NASCAR short form docs and some full length races from the 70s and 80s. All the goodwill those provide are wiped away when I turn on a modern NASCAR race. They've really botched it.

They're gonna need to pit soon after all of these pace laps.

21 big laps in between red flags. These are for mild pop-up showers that don't even rain on the entire track. Off to do anything else, I tried.

I'm actually friends with some relatives of Blaney so I'm pulling for him. I'd like to follow a little more. Maybe my $5 wager will turn into a weekly thing and I'll follow

This is great. Admittedly, I had no idea who he was, and when I watched the video of him and the bonsai tree, the way he talks made me think he was European. Would be fun to see him make a splash tonight.

LOL.
He's actually an Indycar driver. Two time series champ.
Actually had a silly YouTube series where he'd go into the crowd and they wouldn't even recognize him.
So, you're incredibly on point.

Watching the wreckfest that turns into cautions which last fifteen minutes.

I know things seem different when you are a kid, but there is no way it took this long to clean things up back in the day.

The dead carcass of what used to be a good sport.

This is what Rob Manfred is going to turn baseball into.

Denny Hamlin getting roasted by the crowd, for good reason. What a dolt. Team has to let him know not to be burning out.

They take their sweet ass time putting out fires, but are on point with the giant black screens.

Very hopeful that report is right.
After Robert Wickens’ injury he’s reminded me just being alive is a huge victory
