No one wants to live in ... Minnesota
Prince does! :)

(Slightly more seriously - because I live in Minneapolis nearly 50% of my time - I have yet to find a city/state that so many of the residents - at least the people I know - would be so inexplicably proud of to the point of never wanting to migrate anywhere outside a few miles away from the places they grew up in. )

This describes Pittsburgh as well IMO. Allegheny County has some kind of invisible fence at its boundary lines.

Indeed. You either leave by the time you're 30 or might as well just buy a cemetary plot in Pixberg at that point.

About 80% of my graduating HS class still lives within 15 miles of the school.

If you're upper middle to upper class white people DC is great.
That's my point, though. If you look at the rent parameter on the left of the page, it goes from $0-1600.

$1600 ain't gonna do it.
$1600 MIGHT get you a studio in NE somewhere.

Seriously, who is living somewhat well in DC for $1600 a month?

Me. That is with two roommates though, and the definition of "well" may be different for someone in their young-mid 20s. But we still have a row house in a nice area of NW and pay much less than $1600 each. When I was in Rosslyn right across the river we had a nice 2 bedroom in a highrise which was around $1500 for both of us.

Really? I don't want you to get into detail as to your location but that is amazing for NW. Renting from the owner or a property magmt company?

Yeah since the entire area is gentrifying at so quickly you can find some really good deals if you comb craigslist often. I believe it's a property company but I'm not 100% sure as I just jumped into the lease late when one of my buddies had to move out. I also have friends who pay $2000 grand per bedroom in DuPont houses so the variance is huge.

I'm not sure if our housing conditions are conducive to hosting families unless you like boxed wine and Nintendo 64 drinking games.

Ah I gotchya. Yeah there are a lot of gentrifying areas that you can find on the cheap. 1 block is good, the surrounding blocks are not so good. But it's getting better. My brother bought a house in NE on a block that is fantastic. Upper middle class and all that. But it's surrounded by a war zone for now.

No. 1: Denver

(but No. 3! No. 3!! No. 3!!! :fist: )
oh god, my Colorado friends will become even more impossible to deal with! I've had 3 friends move to Denver in the last 10 years and I had to block 2 of them on Facebook for going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about how Colorado rules and everywhere else drools.

I don't get the Harrisburg either. Factorial Jr. lives in downtown Harrisburg and it's a ghost town on the weekends.

Great...there is a strong chance I may move to Mechanicsburg in the next 5 years. So...yeah. Fun.

I haven't been in a few years, but the city of Harrisburg is a dump. I've no doubt they have their share of tony suburbs, and maybe Mechanicsburg is nice.

It's next to Carlisle, so my car show itch will be thoroughly scratched.

I remember my uncle would have to go over there to draw his paychecks when he was home on leave. Or something goofy like that. I thought that facility got the axe by the realignment commission in the 90s, but I guess not.

Unless you're talking about a completely different or unrelated installation. lol

It's a Defense Information Systems Agency facility. Probably didn't exist yet.

I have family in Mechanicsburg. The area where they live is like Cranberry but smaller and older. I've never been to downtown Mechanicsburg though.

Seattle is a great place to live if you hate people, everyone else will feel the same way about you.

My understanding is that it's in the Navy facility that is right off Exit 3 of that 'Hwy 581 Capitol Beltway'. I'd commute up to 30 minutes from there so I'm sure I could find something agreeable. I'd be more likely to lean west to Carlisle than farther into Harrisburg. Our family is in Latrobe so it would just make more sense, all things being equal.

Milken Institute Best-Performing Cities 2022:

https://milkeninstitute.org/report/best ... stream=top

(You have to open the PDF to see the rankings)

I like Pittsburgh, but it's falling down - 153rd out of 200.

The top includes all the usual suspects from US News rankings (Austin, SLC, Seattle, San Jose, Dallas, Colorado Springs - even my hometown of Fayetteville), but No. 1 to Provo is a little surprising...

I wouldn't think housing was "cheaper" in KC than Fayetteville, but ok.
