Blackjack's Thread of Illness and Ailments

I’ve pretty much fully pre-grieved for my parents. They’re both 81 and are (vocally) tired of it all. It’s alll just bonus time at this point.

Yeah, that would be ideal. My MIL was meant to retire this year, she's early 60s. She just cashed in all her PTO and is going to retire anyway. I really don't want to work till I am terminally ill, I hoped the same for her.

The subtext here is my wife has terrible cancer genes. We have kind of agreed that I am going to die first, at least that's The Plan. I am not convinced she can hold up her end of that bargain.

I have friends who lost a parent, when they were a teenager. I’ve been blessed.

Today I mark a half century on this planet. I am lucky to still have both parents as every one of my close we friends have lost at least one parent. My parents have both had cancer. Dad five types and mom one.

I expect cancer to come for me before a heart issue.
That’s why I bank as many sick days as I can. Fortunately, we can roll them over.

I caught a nasty stomach bug and it’s been a rough few days. Finally remembered a good remedy for bowel and abdominal pain.
Midol
Fire away, but you’ll thank me in the future for said knowledge.

Soon as the Steeler game ended, I felt like crap. Started getting cold chills. Took a Motrin and went to bed, must've had a good fever as it broke overnight. Then it came back today. Took another Tylenol and am sweating my nads off.

I went for my (second) sleep study last night, for sleep apnea.
I have no idea how they get an accurate test. I have 20 wires everywhere in my head. I was up at least 4 times... then the lady walks in at 5:30 and wakes me and says I'm done. She's all chatty Cathy at 5:30 am to boot.

Bruised taklbone and found a break in a vertbrae that they think may be an old injury although other than some sciatica I have never had any back trouble.

Gets a little better every day but yeah- back pain sucks. Especially when you have to poop.

They really only need a couple hours of data. They can see how often you stop breathing pretty quickly among other things. Technology is pretty crazy.

My mom, dad, and brother all have CPAP machines of varying types. Is this a hereditary thing? My mom has had heart valve replacement, my dad is obese, and my brother is just a run of the mill 41 year old. My doctor says that overweight people probably suffer from some sort of apnea.

Being overweight plays a big factor, but you can have Sleep Apnea and be a normal weight too. Different kinds of SA out there, but being overweight is a big factor. When I was at my heaviest I had it pretty bad, once I lost alot of weight.. it went away. Not the same for everyone though. Either way it's a serious thing that people seem to not take seriously. It can and will kill you if not treated. I don't say this just cause I work for Philips either haha .

What's this experience like? I'm reasonably sure I'm apneic, and have been torturing Mrs Tif for years by not even attempting to get this sorted out.

I can concur. I hurt my back around Christmas time, and only until a week or so ago was I able to #2 without wincing in pain.

When I was heavier (210 vs the 170 I am now), my snoring was worse. That said, I am skinnier now (in normal weight), and I can definitely snore pretty good even at this weight. But yes, generally being overweight and especially obese is a huge risk factor. When you factor in all of the other dangers of being obese, it's no bueno.

Edit: I should add that my Dad was probably no heavier than 150 his whole life and snored like crazy. So as skullman said it's largely genetic too.

When I worked at summer camp back in college we had a counselor who probably went 6’2” 350 and his snoring was absolutely window rattling. We moved him to his own room of the staff house and you could still hear him.
