Blackjack's Thread of Illness and Ailments

Gout for some reason always feels to me like a Ye Olde Tyme disease that people shouldn't get any more, like rickets or scurvy.
I would greatly appreciate an eradication because it's absolutely miserable.
Would cutting down on the red meat help?

I ended up hitting it with naproxen, topical NSAID, and a heating pad, and was able to play dek hockey relatively pain free.

Of course, because this is how things work, I scheduled an appointment with my PCP to have it checked out, and I have no symptoms today.

So now I'm left wondering what the hell my issue was yesterday morning

My strep symptoms started Tuesday night and I started antibiotics Wednesday. I don't feel as awful but throat and head are still bad... any of you internet doctors think I should hammer a dose of prednisone if I have it laying around?

That's how quickly mine will come and go, and getting up and moving seems to help about 70% of the time. I'd still go see the doc and let them know. Mine gave me a specific pain pill to take as needed that knocks it out pretty quickly.

Yeah he gave me a script for the med you mentioned yesterday and a blood panel in 2 weeks so I guess we'll see what's up.

I destroyed my ankle back in High School and every few years since, I re-injure it.

Yesterday when I was out walking the dog and a half mile from home was every few years. Hobbled it since you can’t really ride a cocker spaniel.

Went to get an X ray on the foot to rule things out. Pretty sure I was the youngest patient there by about 25 years.

Compound Fractured mine during my senior year and haven't been right since. I know the pain, sadly. Get better!

It's a lot better today, should be able to mow with a brace on it. It's funny, it goes out in the most innocuous ways possible. Just walking the dog, not even really uneven sidewalk, boom. Meanwhile I was moving boxes and furniture up and down stairs all afternoon last weekend and no issues at all.

I'd wear a brace all the time but after a couple hours it starts to dig into the back of my ankle and hurts more than the actual injury.

Yea about once a month or so, it just locks up and I can barely move it. I've got nasty arthritis in it already that makes it just an absolutely nightmare some days.

@mac5155 when your gout flares up, does it bruise?

Warm to the touch and a little red. I've never had a bruise though

Hmm...

I had what may have been a flare up last Sunday (the 9th). Felt it coming on for 2 days. Xray and bloodwork I got on the 7th showed nothing/weren't exactly conclusive. Bruises started showing on Monday/Tuesday, and although the pain was gone by Saturday, it flared back up yesterday and was uncomfortable today.

Have to wait til the 26th to see a specialist, but now I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't gout and something was missed on the Xray.

Tart cherry extract pills from Walmart. I usually do 2 pills twice a day. Ibproufen (short of an Indocin scrpit) for pain.

Specialist said it was a prolonged gout attack, and hit me with a cortisone shot, which is probably one of the worst types of pain I've ever felt. Almost vomited waiting for the pressure and pain to subside post-shot

Did the shot go in the painful area? I can only imagine because it hurts to lightly touch my toe when I have a flare up

Right in the joint, then spread through that side of my foot for about 10 seconds. And agreed, because I brushed my toe off a step last night and almost couldn't make it up the last 2.

I haven't had a good Ole big toe flare up in quite some time. Now it usually comes in my ankle.

Reached into the convection oven/air fryer last week, burned the top of my wrist pretty badly. Started to hurt worse and swell over the weekend, so I went to urgent care yesterday. Yep...it's infected. Ten days of antibiotics.

Not sure if I've ever had any wound get infected...it's fairly gross although it's at least scabbed over.
