Gotcha. Make sure he's cutting expansion joints into the patio at the end of it all.

He planned on doing joints between the pours, and I did ask him to do some relief cracks or whatever they're called.

Probably don't want your guy smoking weed but to each their own...

They're called control joints, and you definitely need them - especially for a patio that size, even if being split into two pads.

He's putting an expansion joint (isn't that like rubber between two separate pads) and control joints (scoring the top and then cutting down I think with a saw).

Okay, that's what I'd expect to see. It's not rubber for the expansion joint, but this dense, hard, fibrous material. At least, that's what was used between the steps and my patio.

Yeah I really trust this guy. The rest of them just asked what I wanted. This guy gave options... "you could do this to save money" and "I'm going to do it this way so it lasts" type stuff.

I dug it out today (ha! Take that Mr dentist, operating heavy machinery after wisdom teeth pulled) and he's coming tomorrow to frame. Hopefully gravel shows up tomorrow as planned as well. Hell we could have it done by Saturday

So I ended up having about a $900 surplus on budget for the patio, wanting to put that money into a nice set of patio furniture and possibly a deck box. Are the sets from Home Depot about the gold standard? I'm looking for sturdiness and durability more than anything. Nothing fancy... just a 6 seat set with table and umbrella. I also was thinking about looking at Sam's Club.

We've had good luck with sets from Target, fwiw.

I bought a set from Target at least 15 years ago. Table, 6 chairs, 2 End tables and an umbrella. I store the chairs each winter from the rafters in the garage and just took them out again on Saturday. (The umbrella is no longer with us as of two years ago.)

We bought a Martha Stewart Living set from Home Depot about 7 years ago (glass top, metal frame/chairs), and it has all held up well, for the most part. Some minor rust, but I have yet to come across a metal set that didn't have rust in some areas.

Our umbrella (8 or 9') was purchased from Target, and we love it. Nice pop of color, sturdy, and provides plenty of shade for our round, 4 chair patio set. We also have an additional 6-8 folding Target patio chairs for when we have parties at our house. FYI, Target currently has a 2-day sale going on for their Patio furniture - save up to 30%, with an extra $20 off $100 purchase using promo code SPRING.

Thanks all. I think the two chairs and 'end table' we have on the front porch was from our Target wedding registry... guess that makes it almost 6 years old this year, though it was always kept under cover.

Home Depot isn't the gold standard, but they're adequate. My wife and I went with the higher end cushions that you can throw in the washing machine. That's usually the biggest issue with patio furniture; and paint peeling.

We went the other route, and bought chairs that had the tight-knit mesh.

We would have done the same, but didn't like the look of the chairs, or the table that went with it.

Well, hauled around 3 loads of landscape stone this weekend. Concrete gets poured on Wednesday of this week and then the following Monday. I have the rock in piles and then will spread it once the concrete is poured and forms are removed. Should look really nice.

I am thinking about doing flower pots on pavers in the stone, instead of planting directly into the ground. I am also looking at doing maybe one or two bushes in the area by the house (80% of it is in front of the porch, 20% is in front of the house). The stone is black slate, my siding is a dark blue. I was thinking an Azalea bush but also thought maybe just going with a rose bush as well. Any input? I am not a shrub guy. I want something low maintenance and that won't get higher than ~4' and wider than ~2-3'.

Felt good to mow the lawn for the first time this season. I haven’t had a chance to get to the gas station for fuel yet, so I used some of the pure gasoline that I have for my snowblower.

:thumb: Just mowed here too.

Still had half a tank from last year. She fired right up on the first pull and ran fine...
