 $37 for a bag of milorganite on Amazon. I can buy a bag at the local true value for $15.
I got triple 19 at agway for 15 a bag. You can't beat their prices on fertilizer and it's good stuff.

Went through a tank and a half of fuel getting the rest of the leaves to my fence in preparation for the next leaf collection in two weeks. Also mowed and trimmed the entire lawn, and am wondering if it’ll be the last time I have to do that for the season. That’d be nice.

Mines still growing significantly. Had to double mow the front yard today due to my oak finally dropping most of its leaves. Single on the back fortunately. Yard looking pretty great... today was the first time when I came inside I didn't have anything left on the short list. Weirdly good feeling

Welp, I guess I'll need to move the mower to the back of the garage and get the snowblower prep'd for the first time in what seems like forever.

Spent part of the afternoon uprooting and absolutely out-of-control artichoke plant from the garden to make room for some brassicas and greens/lettuces. And I learned that I rather enjoy gardening with a machete on my hip.

I love artichokes.

I tend to only grow stuff that's rare and/or expensive at the market. The one thing I've learned from growing artichokes every spring for close to 10 years is that I don't like artichokes quite as much as I thought I did.

Anyone here have experience building and maintaining an outdoor herb garden? I maintain basics on a kitchen counter/windowsill basis, but I'm looking to plant some more exotic stuff outside to see what I can get going. Thai basil, lemon thyme, maybe the odd rhyzome like galangal, that sort of thing. I want to do a table-height bed and the spot want to put it gives me space for something of about maybe 8 square feet in area.

That's all you need. Herbs outdoors are easy. Prune often and don't overwater

Speaking of, I'm starting my plants this weekend. Got a 72 count peat pot greenhouse. Should have a wonderful garden this year.

What all are you planting and where are you getting the seeds?

I was going to start seeds about 3/15.

I'm trying to hold off on seeds longer this year. Last year got bit by the frost in early May.

If anybody is into heirloom seeds, seedsavers.org is a good resource.

I won't put anything in the ground until 5/15 but I turned the closet in my office into a little grow space. Took the doors off, mounted some grow lights and did all my seeds there last year. I'm thinking 8 weeks in there should be perfect. Did about 5 or 6 last year and some weren't quite ready for transplant

I just get seeds from the big box stores. I used to order them and I'd have about as much success (failure) with the 2 buck packs.

This year I'll be starting indoors:
Roma tomatoes
Hungarian wax peppers
Bell peppers
Cucumbers (I am trying English this year for the first time)

I think that's it..
And I will direct sow:
Green beans
Zucchini
Beets
Butter lettuce (may start this one indoors)
Cabbage

Yep, this is my plan too. 8 weeks indoors then transplant outdoors. I too only did 6 weeks inside last year.

8 weeks indoors seems a bit much. Does that include the 2-3 weeks of acclimating the plants outdoors before transplanting into the ground?

I've had very little success with direct sow for some reason. Is that a nutrient thing, or what?

My 8 weeks will include transition period. I'm thinking 4-5 weeks in yogurt cups, transplant to formula cans, start weathering them a week after transplanting.

Some plants like cucumbers do not like to have their roots disturbed. Others do well enough in colder weather that it's easier to just direct sow.

I did zucchini seed indoors last year though and they turned out great.

Okay, this is good to know. I've always been gunshy with outdoor herbs aside from transplanting several established rosemary bushes at our first house. Thank you, sir.

The thai basil in my Aerogarden is basically a weed. Cut it back however much you want, and it will grow back in a week.

I have chives outdoors that I planted ...8? Years ago. Still keep coming back year after year after clipping them back in early spring.

Yeah some things will just take off like wildfire outside. I always start my tomatoes and peppers inside and a lot of the other stuff just goes right into the ground.

We've had a few flowers start to pop out of the ground in our garden. Surprising, given that it has been covered with snow for months straight.

I hope to get my garden at 50% perennial fruits and veggies. Right now there's asparagus, blueberries and hops. I have 3 raised beds that may get raspberries and/or strawberries some day.
