Gardening/Maintenance Thread

Postby dodint » Tue Sep 14, 2021 11:58 am

My lawn service came and went by 9am today. By 10am the first of the neighbors have started cutting their lawn, which is effectively a mating call for all the retirees on our road.

Objectively I should see it as a good thing. All the lawns will be evenly cut and matched. Irrationally, I **** hate the retirees around me for having absolutely nothing to do except wait for my lawn service so they can spring into action.

@mac5155 @King Colby @willeyeam

After a test run with ortho’s 24-d product on some clover in a small patch, i declared jihad on three splotches of creeping Charlie and sprayed them this evening. Not a big chance of rain in the forecast, and we are out of town all weekend, so the time was right. Gonna dethatch in a few week once these bastards are done.

Keep us updated. My hose reach is limited for various reasons so I may go the KC (I think it was him) route with the Fall blend and spread it that way.

I've heard that about your hose reach.

The fall blend did a good job but I did have to then spray 24-d on some new growth.

Curious why hose reach matters... Put it in a pump sprayer?

Good point. I was so focused on the shortcomings of ulfs hose that I didn't even think about its relevance

Question for you: did you overseed before or after top dressing? I’m gonna do a little leveling first but I’m unsure on when I should overseed

Overseed then top dress would be my suggestion. You could do it before and after also if it's not a huge area. In my case that would involve another $250+ of grass seed.

Anyone have a tree trimming and/or removal service that they like that also services Westmoreland County? I need to get a maple trimmed and also need to get a quote to remove four very large pines.

Penn Line out of Scottdale is good. My wife, sister, and uncle work there. That probably impacts the pricing I get but worth a shot?

A few others I've had friends use were Stockton tree service and Browns tree service.

What do you use for top dressing?

I aerated and overseeded last weekend. Not going to go crazy... might just top dress one of my yards. Was thinking just those compost/manure mix bags from Home Depot mixed with some sand and other cheap soil

We're actually having a big tree removed from our backyard as I type this. Not sure if they're in Westmoreland, but we use Davey tree service. They've done a few jobs for us and no complaints / good pricing.

Didn't think I'd be this emotional about the one coming down today. They had a hard time identifying it, but landed on some sort of mountain ash. It got infested with some sort of tiny beetle evidently. Trunk was rotting on one side and half of the tree didn't leaf this year...and its close enough to the house to cause some damage.

Still, though, gonna miss it. The spring color of the leaves was that light bright green. Absolutely beautiful. We took some samples to see if we can propagate.

Sad.

I've cut down 8-10 big trees since moving here 4 years ago. My wife hates it, I have no interest in large ugly misplaced trees. There's literally one single tree on the property that I like, it's some kind of crabapple that is beautiful all year around especially right now.

The others are shtty maples and one giant oak in the center of the front yard that is never leaving because id never be allowed and plus it would probably cost like 10 grand

I lost all my ash trees a couple years ago due to the f'ing beetles.

@King Colby would hate my property. Trees everywhere.

Yep, dead ash trees all over my property too. Luckily they're all in the woods

We’re finally in perfect lawn mowing weather. Hope the season ends soon, because I’m about done with it all.
