I don't even think they sniff .500 now.

Kind of like, they have a chance - but we all know they never had a chance.

They pretty much are who we thought they were :pop:
@count2infinity

Makes sure we again store shad's inevitable prediction of Pirates doom. Last year it was a "sub-500" team prediction IIRC.
I forget what I predicted in the thread about it a month or two ago, but it was definitely sub-.500

The pirates seem to almost be punting on 2016, so you would like to think that 2017 will be the season in which they try to win a world series.

Immediate prediction for next year?

They don't re-sign Nova, they acquire marginal pitching talent, Cutch gets traded for prospects. The Pirates finish last in the division.

That's not so farfetched, although I still think they will finish above the Reds.

lol It wasn't meant to be farfetched. Taillon and Glasnow, well one of the two came across as a huge disappointment. Cutch, did enough to warrant a serious discussion on getting traded this summer, so I don't see how 2017 is "the year" anymore.

Cole needs to get it figured out, the Pirates don't want to spend the money to acquire a #2, so I don't see the rotation getting a major player.

It's depressing to think that the team you root for will probably never compete for a championship. But that's where I am with the Pirates.

The 20 years of losing was bad, obviously, but to get to October baseball three years running but are unable to make the financial leap to secure players that will bring a championship team...is a bit much.

I still refute that they are "unable." More like unwilling. Like I said before, that 98 win season plus the two before it was enough for die-hard fans to justify everything that's happening and now if they slide, we'll get called ungrateful because they "know what they're doing" and winning 98 games.

If they trade Cutch it can't be for just prospects, there has to be MLB talent coming back. They might not be (most likely are not) willing to spend money to put the best group on the field but the FO has been beating the drum for 2017 since last offseason. If they kick that can further down the road by trading Cutch for prospects only I think it'll cost multiple people their jobs. They can keep an eye on the future while still putting a competitive team on the field next year, they chose not to do it this season, I don't think they can afford to do it again.

The Pirates are kind of in a similar situation that the San Diego Chargers were in the late 1970's. The only two teams better than you in the whole sport are on your side of the bracket.

Last few years were just vintage pirates luck similar to the guys sucking out loud while wearing a P on their hat then turning into stars for another team. One year after the 2nd WC gets added, the Pirates would have outright went to the division series the next 3 years. As soon as the Cardinals come slightly back down to Earth and an opponent the Pirates can beat, the Cubs become unstoppable.

@slappybrown

This is from 2/3/2016. This is my only prediction for the PSU/Pitt game. Pitt won by 3, and my spread was Pitt -2.5. That is a perfect line.
If I was personally setting the line, I'd say Pitt -2.5. But I'm not an oddsmaker.
COME AT ME BRO.

In eight days, we will be exactly one year away from the PSU-Pitt matchup we've all been waiting for. I'm pretty excited for this game, should be a fantastic tune-up to get the boys ready for Temple.
Temple is your historical rival after all.
When Penn State wins next year, the level of trolling on this board will be unprecedented. I may have to voluntarily resign as moderator just so I can go full EPP/WVU on you.

There's a difference between playful trash talking and a legitimate prediction, son. I don't **** around with my Vegas line predictions.

Predicting what you think the line will be is not the same thing as predicting Pitt will win. No amount of UPS spin can change what you wrote but I don't want to hijack this thread.
