I always share this anecdote--five or six years ago, we drove down a day early to the OBX. There was a tropical storm approaching and making a near-direct hit, and since there was no evac order in place (and no major storm surge), thought it would be cool to check it out.
That might have been sustained winds (at most) 55-60 mph, and I couldn't believe how intense that was. Can't even imagine a Cat 1, let alone a Cat 5.

Thanks all. They just lost power so now we’re on minimum communication. I’m sure they’ll be safe but it doesn’t sound very fun to sit there listening to your house get destroyed.

My wifes company sent several crews. She spent the day yesterday getting some new hires DOT physicals down there. Said it was a fun day

My parents aren’t far from there, in rotunda. They decided not to evacuate and are sheltered in a walk in closet at my aunts. My dad just said it’s slowing down, but the concern in the south side of the storm coinciding with high tide.nocera wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 8:53 am My folks live in Venice, about 24 miles up the coast from Port Charlotte. They were just here this weekend and insisted on going home so they could prep their house. They’re about to get rocked. They’re in evacuation zone C. A & B have been evacuated so they’re next. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get ordered soon.

baby meow’s kindergarten field trip to a farm was supposed to be Friday. They postponed it two weeks because of the rain. We could get between 7-9 inches of rain Fri-Sun

I can't post it here because we have a swear filter as if we're in grade school, but there is an interesting video of Tampa Bay with no water in it on the interesting as **** subreddit. Heh.

Parental update: mom keeps sending photos of her and her dog sheltering in the "safe" room despite her children continuously telling her to stop using her phone and conserve power.

Maybe the crank radio has a USB port.

They’ve been incommunicado for over an hour now so I’m assuming the cell tower is down.

My wife has to be on Zoom with her class from 7-2:30, just like if she was in the classroom with them. Not even in the depths of COVID in Spring 2020 did she have to do that. Ugh.

There is a follow up tweet to that. It was in a garage but it floated out when the garage flooded.
