Job and General Employment Thread

Postby MrKennethTKangaroo » Wed Oct 30, 2019 8:26 am

I've been here no longer than 10 minutes and already I've been triggered in the following ways:

-a coworker eating potato chips (possibly doritos) for breakfast
-another coworker fidget with a mother fcking binder clip for the entire time ive been here
-another coworker burp three times under his breath after arriving. I once kept track of how many times he burps a day and it was around 12. he also yawned about 12 times.
-the burper now appears to be clipping his finger nails.

this sucks

edit: one more trigger: the burper drinks 1-2 bottles of diet coke a day and does not recycle the bottle; he just throws it (loudly) in the trash can in his desk instead of moving less than 6 feet to the community recycling bin.

You eat chips and/or soda for breakfast and still have the will to live? Crazy.

How would you answer the interview question: "What is your management style?"

I know it's going to be asked of me next week and have a rough idea, but it seems so open.

This made me laugh so hard, I love it.

I actually just had this convo with a direct report of mine. My management style is "don't make me manage you." I hate pretty much everything Bill Belichick, but the one thing that man and I agree on is his "do your job" mantra.

Edit: Now, would I say that in a job interview? Probably not.

Yeah, just say the "I hate Bill Belichick" part and that should be enough if you're still in Pittsburgh metro...

I usually say something along the lines of I build trust with my employees so they know they are empowered to make most decisions with minimal input from myself. They can come to me with anything they believe is a difficult task or any type of question and we will work through it together to get to the solution. I believe failures are a learning opportunity for everyone, and if you are going to fail, fail quickly. So my management style is more empowering the employees. I believe this type of management style when built with trust will create a high functioning team that will drive great results.

Dick Winters had some good leadership lessons:
“Leadership At The Point Of a Bayonet“
1. Strive to be a leader of character, competence, and courage.

2. Lead from the front. Say, “Follow me!” and then lead the way.

3. Stay in top physical shape–physical stamina is the root of mental toughness.

4. Develop your team. If you know your people, are fair in setting realistic goals and expectations, and lead by example, you will develop teamwork.

5. Delegate responsibility to your subordinates and let them do their job. You can’t do a good job if you don’t have a chance to use your imagination and creativity.

6. Anticipate problems and prepare to overcome obstacles. Don’t wait until you get to the top of the ridge and then make up your mind.

7. Remain humble. Don’t worry about who receives the credit. Never let power or authority go to your head.

8. Take a moment of self-reflection. Look at yourself in the mirror every night and ask yourself if you did your best.

9. True satisfaction comes from getting the job done. They key to a successful leader is to earn respect–not because of rank or position, but because you are a leader of character.

10. Hang Tough!–Never, ever, give up.

Yeah, I'm working from home today thanks to getting no sleep last night and the train line being suspended.

I had already arranged for WFH today because I had to go in on Thursday, my normal WFH day. Woke up and the power is still out. Really didn't think it would be so I prepared nothing and set my alarm for late. Hopefully it comes back up by noon or I'm going to run out of hotspot and laptop juice and I'll have to either go in or call off completely.

One of the divisions in my company makes toilets for passenger trains. I had to design a valve for them a few years ago that is used to drain the waste from the tank when in the depot (cue cousin Eddie jokes).

I got a notice that one of these valves failed and they want me to look at it. A used valve.

Today I get to evaluate and tear it apart. Not a great way to spend my Friday.

The amount of jokes that come out of that group is endless. I can't tell if they hate me or not because I always drop at least one joke in each conversation with them.
