https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2 ... ork-times/The Athletic, the subscription sports website owned by the New York Times, announced Monday that it was laying off nearly 20 reporters, or about 4 percent of its journalistic staff. The news was delivered in an email to staffers from The Athletic’s publisher David Perpich and executive editor Steven Ginsberg.
The note described an evolving approach to coverage. The NFL and English Premier League dominate reader interest, it said, and staffing for those leagues remains mostly unchanged. Because NHL and Major League Baseball audiences are more local, those leagues will have some beats eliminated.

We get the NY Times via site license for my university (actually both schools I've worked for had it, and I still have access to both accounts), but The Athletic isn't included. In fact, reading that WaPo's articles comments, many NY Times subscribers don't have The Athletic bundled and won't add on to it. For our university, it was like $1000+ to add The Athletic for our users. My previous school has the NY Times Cooking app built in to that subscription, but my new employer doesn't. It appears the NY Times is intent on nickling and diming subscribers. I'm sure that will work out well for them.

Oh, DK was definitely relishing in the news. And apparently lots of people were “subtweeting” him, including Kaboly and his ex-employee Sara Civian. And now he’s acting even more holier than thou (if that’s possible) because he’s offering some of those laid off people jobs! What a great guy, that DK!
Also, he claimed his top line revenue was $1.15 million (and profitable) in 2022.

Hate to see that happen to such a nice guyLooks like The Athletic is purging staff this week, including Rob Biertempfel. Very strange that he only covered home games, like the rest of the Athletic beat reporters.

DK's holier than thou approach to EVERYTHING is 1000% annoying. He isn't wrong about any of this Athletic stuff, but the way he goes about it is just so self-serving.

I was getting ready to cancel my sub with The Athletic. Went to my settings and it cancel and was countered with an offer for $2/mo.
Ok, I guess I'll stick around, but only this time.

They can keep the deals coming and I'll keep it, but there's no way I'm ever paying $79 a year or whatever full price is for it.

Of course it was a Pittsburgh person (Seth Rorabaugh) that voted McDavid 5th for Hart, the only non-1st place vote he got...
Pittsburgh Sports Media Thread
I'm annoyed that he did that, but I do recall him having similar votes in the past based on how he defines value.
He's usually pretty level-headed, so it's hard to wrap my head around why he did that.

If he said 2nd because you can't have two MVP candidates on the same team (McDavid/Drai) and put, like, Pasta up there. But McDavid at 5 is tough...

Looks like the Red Wedding over at ESPN today. Suzy Kolber (27 years), Jalen Rose, Jeff Van Gundy among others have been laid off.

Oh, no, how will I ever get by without Keyshawn Johnson's perspective...

Todd McShay and Steve Young out but they keep Mel Kiper and probably Booger McFarland. Makes sense.

What does Mel Kiper have on ESPN that they can't let that guy go?
