I did something similar a couple years ago but in my recollection didn't see an increase in my premium. It was funny, they kept asking me, "Do you want to claim your $400 or what?" What are you, a loan service now?

Also found a shingle on my driveway this morning, but no signs of water damage in the house. It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to pull the trigger on a new roof before I'm ready. We do get some water in our bedroom due to bad flashing that nobody seems to want to repair. But it only happens during really heavy rains, so we've been crossing our fingers for a while that it will hold up for a year or two more.

I dunno, I'd probably replace the roof before you have to deal with water on the inside, even if it's painful.

Getting close to that thought, NTP. If I can find a place that will finance same as cash for a year, it may happen this summer.

If you even get a contractor to call you back, that's a plus. I don't know what's going on now, but I have to call way more people than I have in the past just to get a return phone call. Guess business is really good for everyone.

I thought that too. But then if I get it fixed myself and it comes out to, say $4500, and I ask for reimbursement they'll want to know why I didn't file a claim initially. They have a preferred network of contractors they like to work with, etc.

Pretty sure you can't get it fixed yourself then ask for reimbursement, which it appears you already know.

When I had my roof replaced due to hail back in 2010 or so, the insurance company asked me to get it quoted from my own preferred supplier. I'm sure they checked it against some valuation they have based on square footage, and approved the quote. The nice thing is the contractor told me he'd do the work for less than the quote, basically covering the deductible. Not sure if things would work the same for you.

We had a hail storm in our neighborhood in 2020 (this week actually), and nearly every house around us got new a new roof. No exaggeration. We didn't have any tiles down or any leaking, but I figured it couldn't hurt to call and file a claim. Sure enough, the roof was questionable enough that they said we needed a new one. New roof adds a bit of value (and peace of mind) when trying to sell a home, too.

USAA says my premium won't change unless they pay for the repairs. So I'm okay to go through their handling of the contractor and if the damage isn't great enough I can just pay myself and not worry about the premium hike.

I was reading through my policy today and it's nice that the percentage increase in premium is spelled out explicitly, based on the number of claims you've made in the last five years.

USAA was great to work with on our claim. Not quite as easy when trying to get them to lower our car insurance premium when adding a third car and teen driver

I've only ever had to file a claim once, with MetLife, and they were outstanding to work with. The entire process was smooth and seamless, and it worked out well for me in the end (contractor didn't paint half of my bedroom after a water leak, and instead put that money towards upgraded ridge vents).

This is my first homeowners claim with USAA. But they've been great with auto claims. And they made it go away when I tore the face off of a gas pump when I hooked my trailer on it. I didn't get a claim number or anything, it just went away.

I have the Ryobi 40v edger and trimmer. You messed up not getting the trimmer

I can now admit this. The AFS on my B&D is no longer working, so I have to open up the spool cover and manually release the stuck line every few minutes. Gonna cut my losses here.

The Ryobi stuff is nice. My weed eater and reef blower are both Ryobi and work great for the cleanup after mowing.

This is the other trimmer I was looking at. My dad has an EGO and loves it, as does my neighbor.

Ohhh, the EGO has a swiveling handle for edge work, and a brushless motor. Those two features are putting it over the top for me.

Found somebody selling the EGO unit (brand new) on eBay for $160, so I grabbed one.

The call center person I talked to was wrong about this. It becomes a claim as soon as the adjuster sets foot on my property. If I opt to not have them payout on the claim they can note that in my file for the end-of-year underwriter to take into consideration.

That's pretty shitty, IMO.

i had the older model of this. i cannot recommend ryobi yard products. the batteries suck. have had to send back 50% of them, and 100% of the 40v batteries. would recommend EGO

That's good to know. My EGO should be here early next week, so I look forward to giving it a go.

Our roof is only 10-ish years old, but we're underway with getting solar panels. Neighbor across the street got solar two months ago, and the next door neighbor just had new shingles installed last week. Plus three other houses were sold and flipped with new roofs, and two other houses had new roofs installed recently. So that's all on my block in the last year. Not sure what prompted the flurry.
