You can't keep throwing away years when you have a top level defense. Watt is not getting younger. Not sure what you do exactly...hope the new OC and KP make magic together and a switch gets flipped I guess?

KP was already the starter unless proven otherwise. It was proven otherwise. You don't have your obvious starting quarterback healthy and sitting on the bench in the playoffs. Now, Rudolph is more than likely gone, so Kenny becomes the de facto starter again. It'll be interesting to see who they bring in to challenge him for that spot.

They aren't going to hand KP the starting job...which they shouldn't. Now who they bring in to compete with him...remains to be seen. He certainly shouldn't just be anointed QB1 going into camp by default.
He said the next qb is currently on the team so it's KP or MR.

There's nothing more I need to see in Kenny. He's backup grade at best, same for Mason. Do I want them to go get Wilson and pay that albatross of a contract? No - but they need to explore every single scenario to acquire top end talent at that position.

Interesting that sports illustrated's latest mock draft has steeler's needs as "QB, OL, CB"

https://www.si.com/nfl/2024/01/18/posts ... 2792&pid=1

Seems like Tomlin is unaware that QB is a need.

Is there a team in recent memory who drafted a QB in the first round then drafted another QB in the first round two years later?

I don’t think there is that I can remember. Every team waits at least 3 years.

The Steelers ain’t drafting a QB unless a stud falls into their lap

1. He was clearly not the obvious QB after Mason led them to three straight wins
2. No he's not
3. He will be competing for the starting job

No one is going to bring in Mason to be their starter next year. Resigning with the Steelers are backup money is probably one of his best opportunities to win a starting job, I guess maybe NE or LV could offer to bring him in and give him a shot, but they will both be drafting QBs in April.

you guys can have Russ if you want

he won't be much better than Kenny/Mason but he'll bring a lot of bandwagon fans!

The answer is, of course, Cleveland. Weeden in 2012 22nd overall then Manzell in 2014, also 22nd overall.

Lol so yea, proves my point. They ain’t drafting a QB.

I said to friends that the worst thing to happen to the Steelers is Mason continued to play good enough. If he crapped out once KP was healthy, then we would really know if KP stinks or not. At this point it’s likely, but it’s not confirmed. And now the answer is delayed another year

Either way, the Steelers need to fix holes in other areas before it really matters who the qb is.

No roster is perfect. They need upgrades and depth that’s for sure.

But really, it’s just going to be where Pickett is next year. He stunk last year, Mason showed what a guy with limited ability, but knew what he was doing could do with this run game and Pickens.

I still have some hope for KP. He played well in the game and a quarter after Canada was gone. And Mason ran with it and couldn’t be yanked. But I still think he would have played a very similar game to Mason. We will see I guess

Yeah, it's amazing how some people seem to have forgotten already just how bad Matt Canada was at his job. He basically made everyone worse, and his removal made everyone either get better or at least seem better...Pickett included. Pickett's greatest value is as a 'systems' QB. He doesn't have an off the charts skillset, but he can be (hopefully) very good given the right system. If they bring an OC from outside that can develop a system around KP's current skillset, and the OL and RBs produce similar to the last 3 games or so, they have a chance to be good to great.

Now if the lack of down the field throws and refusal to use the middle of the field were more 'Kenny is afraid' than 'Canada sucks', then obviously he isn't and won't be the guy.

But who right now, going into next season, would you even replace him with? Who is available via FA, or who would be available when they pick, that is patently and unmistakably better?

It's easy to forget when he misses large chunks of every season.

Frankly, that’s a big concern for me.

But if the line blocks like they did the last 4 games or so, then I think he stays upright much more. And hopefully it limits how often he runs into sacks himself. But for the line to really take a step, they at least need a top notch center and maybe an improvement over Dan Moore

The pocket was fine, but Kenny would still spin around and scramble into a defender. Where Mason would step up and throw it down field, Kenny would spin and take a sack, getting hurt in the process.

Kenny didn't spin and scramble like that in the one game he played without Canada, and wasn't doing it before he got hurt in the Cardinals game.

I don’t remember it that way but I also don’t care enough to go back and look. In fact, I’m good if I never see another clip of the 2023 Steelers season.

Mason Rudolph is the only 2023 QB the Steelers do not currently have under contract for 2024.

Mason's pocket presence was on a different level from Pickett. It was one aspect where their differences in play were starkly visible, and one could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps the rest of it (success, however limited) flowed from that.

Also, didn't Kenny get hurt scrambling? (If not running around behind the LOS like a madman)
