Newman and his wife decided to get a divorce and announced it 4 days ago. Rough.

Just awful. That whole crash sequence was as Murphy's Law in motion. Drivers seem really shook up.... Even with the new safety stuff in the last decade plus, that was a devastating hit.

NASCAR marriages are usually about as strong as they get. Always sad to see any couple part ways after that long together, especially when children are involved.

Also, the Big One with 17 laps left, of course it was Logano that caused it. What a turd.

In real time that crash looked terrible. In slow mo replay it looks even worse. Man I hope he's ok. He took a direct impact at likely 190mph less than a foot away from his head.

Insane that he was able to survive that. A direct hit a foot from his head. The way the upper halo collapsed In, I thought for sure I just watched someone die.

FS1 is live, reports that Newman is alive and injuries are not life threatening.

Those containment seats are something else. In this case I thought it might have smothered him.

I am on the fence about getting a HANS, not sure I could ever get a containment seat.

Have my Zamp H&NR sitting on my wife’s hope chest and spent the day looking at halo/containment seats (my Corbeau is not going to fit it looks like).

With all the tech available it’s better to be safe than sorry (even in 100hp econoboxes).

I have that Halo for the BMW, and plan to wear a HANS in that car. I just can't imagine road racing with blinders on.

The SRT4 isn't even getting a racing seat. YOLO.

NASCAR isn't my jam, but racing is a family. Glad to hear it looks like Newman will be okay. (Or at least as okay as "non-life threatening" can be)

Just phenomenal.
NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was fully alert and walking around Wednesday, two days after his horrific last-lap crash at the Daytona 500.

Roush Fenway Racing released a statement Wednesday that said Newman "continues to show great improvement" and that he is "fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center."

"True to his jovial nature, he has also been joking around with staff, friends and family while spending time playing with his two daughters," the statement said.

Roush Fenway Racing also posted a photo of Newman and his two daughters on its Twitter account.

It's amazing and awesome that after that type of crash someone is up and playing with his daughters just a couple days after it happened.
