Our daycare just announced that they're imposing a 14 day quarantine for families traveling to the states that the Wolf administration has on their quarantine list... now, obviously if you don't want to tell them you were on a vacation to those states or if you have further questions about that, you can just contact them. Someone (who I work with actually...) replied all "Are we expected to pay tuition during these 14 days of quarantine???" Oh, I don't envy them.

To cover up the marijuana smell?

3 straight days of peeing in the potty. I want so badly to have a period of time with no diapers... we've got about 12 weeks

I would ask if my kid was exposed at daycare and we are expected to quarantine (yes I would quarantine), if I had to pay the tuition.

Just found out my 11 year old will need several thousand dollars worth of oral surgery to yank a tooth down, and then $5800 worth of orthodontry.

How's your Wednesday going?

What is everyone's thoughts on age and appropriateness of giving a child a iPad/tablet?

I've personally seen parents give their kids these things at such young ages just to get the to be quiet. I am trying and will continue to try my hardest to not allow this to happen. I wouldn't think he's going to get one until he's much older, read (not before 5).

We waited until our daughter was 6 to give her access to a Kindle outside of road trips and flights. And even then, she doesn’t have a lot of games on it. Most of the time, she uses it for reading and playing abc mouse, thankfully.

Mine has had one since he was like maybe 18 months? He uses it for YouTube kids and uses it sparingly... sometimes before bed and occasionally when he just wants quiet time alone. Less than an hour a day and the videos are pretty educational. He doesn't watch any TV at all so I dont see any difference. And it doesn't leave the house (unless we're traveling).

Just don't become the kind of parents that gives it to them for hours to get quiet time for yourself. And say no sometimes. Mine barely even asks for it.

This
It’s not the age you give it to them, it’s the quantity and quality of exposure. Technology is a good thing as long as it doesn’t become a necessity.

iPads and Kindles have elaborate parental controls as well. My kids are older, so we have their phones/iPads lock at a certain time. You can limit how much a group of apps gets used, or individual apps.

And never, ever leave a device in their rooms overnight.

Thanks for the input. Lil mac turns 2 in Sept and we have a trip to Aruba planned this winter (maybe it happens who knows at this point) but anyway my wife wants to get him an iPad for the trip. Right now we usually watch sesame street in the morning and monster trucks/construction equipment in the evening before bed for about 15-20 minutes each.

At first I was like, immediately, no. I definitely don't want to be that parent who uses it to get my alone time.

Oh and it most certainly will NOT be an iPad  maybe a fire tablet or one of the cheaper ones.

There's nothing wrong with giving him a Kindle for that trip. If it makes the trip better for all of you, don't even hesitate.

Anyone else's kids watch Blippi? I did a little research on him... he's this 30 yr old dude who used to do poop videos and apparently did one where he does the Harlem shake and takes a crap on his friend. Also hes worth over $40M now.

Anyway, hes actually pretty good, a little funny, and Prince Colby loves it

mini meow watches Blippi on occasion. Seems like an ok dude. I figured he was rolling it in. Apparently he has his own toy line now

Kindle has (or at least had) a whole kids subscription service, with games, books, and so on for their tablets. Very worthwhile, and coupled with the parental controls, age-appropriate.

We have that for both our kids' tablets. It is definitely worth it. It is like $3 a month per tablet

We haven't gone that route yet, because I still don't want my daughter using her Kindle that much.

This is pretty much where we are. They are allowed 1 hr of screen time per day, and that includes the Kindle, TV, computer, etc. Most things on the Kindle are interactive, not games.

We started with the 1 hour per day thing, but Covid threw a wrench into things. She has free reign of the Xbox right now, but at least she's being "productive" by building us houses in Minecraft.
