So the question is how many seasons did chuck noll have a .588 or better percentage?

The answer is 10. He had a 9-5 season and a 6-3 season.

Again, the context is coaching legacies. The complication of comparing across eras.

10 win seasons are cheaper now.
Playoff appearances are cheaper now.

10 wins was a big deal in 1976. That's a .714 win record. In 2024 that's .588.

If you continue to be unable to comprehend that I can't offer further assistance.
The point is valid, but the great equalizer is free agency and the league's push to parity. Wins and playoff appearances are cheaper, but harder to consistently secure year after year after year. It's harder to be exceptional now without a dud year (or several) thrown in there every once in a while.

The Steelers model has been to be consistently competitive, and hope to get hot at the right time while staying healthy. I don't know if that's the best recipe, but I know it's not the worst.

Yeah this is sort of what I'm goofing at. Noll had draconian player contracts, unfettered steroid use, and downfield murder was legal.

Asterisks are everywhere, if you look. :D

Those things do make for interesting conversation. But they're not what we were discussing.

If we're reanimating Chuck Noll to take Tomlin's job while campaigning for him to be fired, I think the firing is the least noteworthy part.

Jay Glazer reports that Tomlin could take a break, ala Sean Payton.

Probably just posturing for his extension. So ownership should probably tack an extra 5 years onto whatever they're discussing now.

Wasn't Payton's break league-mandated?

Honestly a 5 or 10 spot on that wouldn't be a horrible thing in the off-chance they pull it off.

I just saw a stat of 60+ yd TD passes this season:

1. Tua with 4
2. Mason with 3
3. 10 other QBs with 2

Big armed QB that always threw a good deep ball meets offense that doubled down on running down your throat and, after jettisoning an OC that had the imagination of a dryer lint ball, discovered play action works and there's a stud on the field that can take an 8 yard slant 75 yards.

Profit.
