Personal control is one of the factors that researchers have found play into the risk calculus, so I think we both are correct. People are overestimating the risk of flying because, in significant part, they are freaked out by the fact that their lives are in the hands of the pilots. The same sort of calculation would be in play for someone who is afraid to ride in a car driven by someone else, but not afraid to be in a car where they are the driver.@shyster
I agree with that risk perspective post to an extent, but take issue with the example. The difference between flying and driving is not about probabilities, but the semblance of control that driving affords versus being on a plane. I just think it’s a different psychosis at play.

annoyingly this will become the new “I’m not getting the vaccine” excuse but hopefully this drug will make vaccines less needed anyway

Molnupiravir seems pretty much like oral Remdesivir. It will help a bit I guess and it’s nice that you won’t need a hospital admission. But antivirals are what they are for the most part (not curative)

And if your kid already had COVID, you still get them vaxed now because they’ll have to get it eventually anyway and you’re 100% incapable of defining your own deadline for when their immunity runs out (just like with grown ups)

As an alternative to getting vaxxed the "I have antibodies" crowd can get weekly blood tests. And if your kid already had COVID, you still get them vaxed now because they’ll have to get it eventually anyway and you’re 100% incapable of defining your own deadline for when their immunity runs out (just like with grown ups)

The “muh immunity” people are all generally correct - until they aren’t. That’s the issue, that they just won’t know when they turn into a pumpkin. Vax + booster regiment takes the guesswork out, keeps people safe and keeps the wheels churning regardless of when people’s natural defenses mysteriously expire. You’re gonna have to get the shot eventually. Get it now.

So 33% or so of people in the country deny that COVID is a thing to worry about, and have done so since the beginning. If that number was closer to 100% and there were no precautions (basically how we treat the flu) then what’s the death toll. Early forecasts were 2 million or so, but old people (even Trumpy ones) generally took this seriously. More than 33% of them certainly.
I’m wondering if the real fatality count would have been closer to 10 mill, considering how it just tore through the elderly.

I think up until delta it wouldn't have been that much higher. Maybe 2x? Masks and distancing helped but it still did tear through nursing homes anyway and 80-85% of them survived.
Delta though, I mean look at what it's doing to the unvaccinated. Imagine if everyone was unvaxxed. 5x? 10x? 20x?
