This one?

But anyway, I don't think the NH/Nutting dynamic is being accurately represented. I don't think that NH went to Nutting after the 2015 season asking for a budget increase to sign Zack Greinke, and in fact, I doubt he even went for an ok for Happ. I think you have to go back to that year in NH's mind. He was routinely turning turds into gold and felt like his model would continue (then Vogelsong happened). I do believe that the Pirates have a pretty annoying process in place that essentially prevents FA acquisitions that boost the payroll. But what would likely happen, is that NH would have to get the go ahead to pursue high priced acquisitions, and he would do that by presenting a case to ownership that the outlay would provide value (wins) to the team.

I still firmly believe that all off-season inaction in the past is explainable, inactivity this off-season would not be.

Nothing riles up John Steigerwald more than people reacting to a kid almost getting killed by a foul ball.

Is there some kind of genetic defect that compels a person to have the worst possible point of view on every high profile incident?

It's puzzling that it has taken the 2017 season for some to properly grok the Pirates. The needed information has been there all along.
In this regard, I think it's fair to say that many current grokkers enjoyed the ride while still holding their breath, hoping that Nutting and the FO would become addicted to the winning. Among all of the Bucs fans I personally know well, we've had a blast the past 3-4 years. But not a single one of us is surprised that the FO has ultimately screwed this up.

I've been trying to figure out whether it's an act, because I've never met someone that curmudgeonly and cantankerous in real life.

Then you look at Paul, and he's like the happiest person on the planet all the time.

Bucs back in the 9th spot, tied with 8th place Atlanta. 1 game away from 7th place San Diego which now appears to be the best/worst they can get to. 11th place is 2 games behind. Need some L's this week.

I was on the field prior to Saturday's game and briefly met Frank Coonelly. Also heard his interaction with several others, nothing major just basic interaction. He comes across as extremely disingenuous, no wonder Nutting likes him.

I remember when people would counter the stupidity of not trading for Quintana by mentioned his middling performance (by his standards) with the White Sox. So far with the Cubs: 7-3, 3.50 ERA, 125 ERA+, 3.38 FIP, 1.092 WHIP, 10.5 SO9. Unsurprisingly those numbers would be the best among the Pirates starters. Even factoring in his time with the White Sox he would lead the Pirates starters in everything but FIP. Oh well. At least we get the joy of seeing Glasnow do his Rick Vaughn impression and hear about Meadows sucking and injuring every body part in AAA.

This isn't anti-Quintana because I really wanted the Pirates to acquire him. But has it ever been established that the White Sox actually wanted Glasnow and the Pirates were unwilling?

They wanted Bell or Meadows as the centerpiece to the deal and the Pirates were unwilling to part with either. I remember seeing a "rumored" package of Bell/Meadows, Glasnow, and Newman

Hind-sight - I'd give up Meadows and Glasnow for a pitcher that could pitch well for you, and you could flip in a few years.

If the pirates traded for Quintana late in the season, when the cubs acquired him, how different would this team be?

Who said anything about getting Quintana late in the season? The trade should have been made in the offseason when the Pirates were rumored to be working on a trade for him.

Speaking of pitchers....

Do yinz consider Cole to be a 1 or 2 starter?

There's probably a pretty good argument that last offseason Bell is the easier person to trade than Meadows. In that scenario the starting pitching is better but not exponentially so and the offense is even suckier. It still probably doesn't change the fortunes of the 2017 Pirates.

They have a fairly large hole at 3b and perpetually one somewhere in the OF whether that's due to a slump, suspension, injury or just general aloofness. Unless they're acquiring 3 Quintana's the offensive holes outweigh the pitching imo.

I really wanted them to get Quintana and in hindsight if there could've been a deal for the fragile Meadows and Glasnow that would've been a good grab. However, looking at it right now, if the Pirates are going to give up their better prospects it needs to be for offense.
