Yup, I saw they were up 4-2 with two outs for the Phils in the Bottom of the 8th, and thought they might actually pull it off. I hate this team.

Evidently, they had four relievers unable to pitch last night...but didn't call anyone up.

Bae has been a monster in the second half. Been playing a lot more at SS as well. Would still like to see some more power from Swaggerty, but he's definitely made some progress in the second half.
Mason Martin looks to have cooled off in August. He's still hitting for a ton of power (3rd in HR for Bradenton despite on playing 46 games), but his K-rate in August is astronomical.
It'll be interesting to see who the Pirates give September call-ups to. The 40 man roster is full with Holmes, Archer, and Polanco on the 10-day DL. I guess they could call it a season for those three and add them to the 60-day DL, but as of right now the only position players on the 40 man are Kramer, Martin, and Tucker. I'm sure Hurdle can't wait to have 9 more pitchers at his disposal, but moves will have to be made to make space for Craig or Hayes.
Craig, who is bad, is unsurprisingly sucking again. 233/320/322/643 with 1 HR in August. 242/314/364/677 with 4 HRs since the ASB. Dude is a scrub.
Hayes on the other hand has been hitting well. 378 average over his last 10 games. 288/324/442/765 with 6 HRs since the ASB and 315/354/449/804 in August. I still have a ton of concerns about his bat in a position that is expected to produce power, but I would like to see what the kid does with a September callup.

Right forearm strain/tightness at the end of April. Started rehab in July, suffered a setback, and hasn't pitched since. With this franchise, I would expect amputation as a legitimate option.

Here's another low level guy to keep an eye on. He was ranked in the top 200 coming out of high school in the draft, seems like the Pirates took a flyer on him, offered him a decent bonus, and he signed (he was committed to USC).

Congrats to Mitch Keller on being named the International League's Most Valuable Pitcher, joining Zach Duke and Steven Brault as Pirates' prospects to win the award. May you enjoy your disappointing and mediocre future. Also,

Steve Brault hit a long home run today, and pitched pretty well. Also:

Brault is their best starter. He’s been fine, but the rotations is very very bad.

I'd prefer Musgrove still but it's nice to see Brault become a legitimate starter. Haven't checked his ground out rate or fb/hr% but he's done a nice job limiting homers which has become all important the last few years

It's funny that for a decade we've accepted ops is the major offensive stat (generally) but i rarely see opponent ops mentioned for pitchers. Whip is great but has to take a backseat to either hr allowed% or ops against. Of course it's taken into account in depth in war and on xfip stuff and on certain sites but isn't in general parlance

Other than the team of destiny which lost in the playoffs Greensboro was a wonderful team to follow this year.
Martin Sanchez and Castro starred to start the year and got promoted. Then Bae came back from suspension and should win the batting title. Davis embarrassed himself and then rose from the ashes to crush the league the last two months. And herman with a double and hr tonight should end the year ops-ing over .800 in 70+ games at 19. Lots of ks for some of these guys but bushels of power which is the mlb trend and might work
Case dominated the league with 66ip and a 0.77 whip and was promoted. Jennings turned a corner with a very solid season at 20yo. Manasa turned in a very solid performance as the rotation mainstay with 139.2ip 3.48era 32bb 120k at 21yo. Bido was excellent.
Then some dominant relievers flashed their stuff. Notably De Los Santos and his high velocity put up 50ip 73k 12bb 1.44era. And 47.1 26bb 76k for Melendez who ended strong
Mears Murray Gardener Reyes and Ogle had strong appearances as interesting relievers
And then multiple late season starters came on the scene strong including Toribio, Nicasio and Kobos
Earlier in the year Economos dominated the league and moved up. Nova was good. Jacques and Loeprich moved up and were better. Alldred got lots of work as a big lefty reliever and was solid and Smith was good
To a non conservative degree these guys are all prospects. There is a decent argument for them all. The lowest full season level will usually have the most promise since even a 23yo pitcher here has promise as a reliever but this roster had little jetsam other than a few position players that are organizational.
Hopefully this leads to less crap at AA in the near future.
