Sorry mate. :( Jokes aside from the other thread, pets are part of the family and that hurts.

Thanks all. Didn't think I'd get so worked up over our cat, but man it sucked. Wife was balling last night, said her stomach hurts today from being all worked up. I was out digging a hole for her in the rain last night - felt like I was in a remake of The Burbs.

I thought I'd inject some good news into this thread. But ... this being the Pet Thread, it is followed by some very sad news.

The good news is that my dearly-loved Cricket is stitches-free and e-collar-free and now can go run and play again.

About six weeks ago, we noticed a mass down by her bladder. Inevitably, it was cancer. A soft-tissue sarcoma. Our local vet removed the mass but didn't get clean margins. A week later, the tennis-ball-size mass was back. One week!

So we took her to Kansas State Vet Med and the professor of surgery plus the surgical resident worked on her for some hours. The professor is probably the best veterinary surgeon in Kansas. They had to do some really tricky stuff to get the mass out and put little Cricket all back together. Really a master performance. So for the last three weeks we've had to be so careful with her. She had to be kenneled with the dreaded cone on, carried up and down the stairs, etc.

Today she got her stitches out. She's doing great and can resume normal life. Yay. She'll probably have to be on chemo, though, 'cause the sarcoma was so aggressive. But she can handle it.

Again, yay.

Cricket when we first got her:
The very sad news is that we're gonna have to say goodbye to Rosie tomorrow.

Rosie in far better days:
Image
Rosie came to us about five years ago with a mangled back leg. A trap, presumably. We had it repaired (K-State again) and she did OK for a few years. But ... guess what? Yea, brother. She was too old and fragile for surgery, radiation, or chemo. Now the cancer has turned her into a skeleton. We kept trying. We kept trying. But she hasn't eaten in a couple of days and is ... nothing.

We're taking tonight and will say our final goodbye tomorrow.

I still sing to her:

Ro-sie, Ro-sie, give me your answer, do
I'm cro-o-o-ozy, all for the love of you

That's some much-need good news that mitigates the innate fear that comes from seeing there are new posts in this thread.

Oh goodness, @columbia, that's such great news.

Here's some more. Odin ( viewtopic.php?p=447076#p447076 ) is doing great. I said it before ... he's just so cool a dog. As I suggested, we're keeping him. He's our new Ambassador, for fundraisers and such. It's impossible not to smile and laugh around him. Seriously, everyone smiles and/or laughs whenever he's around. They may be laughing at him, but he doesn't care. I have some video of him playing and eating (which is a monumental task for him -- but he manages), The video is raw and I haven't had time to work with it. Maybe next week.

Oh, but Odin has his own song. All of our dogs have songs. Some are a stretch, but Odin's came to me immediately. A modified version of:

Headin' out to Odin
Yea Brother
Headin' out to Odin
No more trouble in my body or my mind.

Haha. He wags his tail and snorts like crazy when I sing it to him.

Ah man, know your pain @redwill. Tonight we celebrate the lives our pets were able live. Siati was a rescue cat so I know she had a better life than what she would have.

First trip to the pet emergency room last night. One of the stupid things my dog does is eat sticks and throw them up occasionally, so when he was doing his dry hacking yesterday it was not totally unusual. But then later on that night he started throwing up bile and I was more concerned, we are getting the tile replaced in our bathroom and I caught him with a piece of the tile in his mouth monday afternoon, so I thought that might be stuck in his intestine. long story short, after 4-5 hours of routing dry heaving I called the pet hospital and they suggested bringing him in. That was 2:30am, they did x-rays, found no blockage, just an upset stomach. He gets a rice/boiled chicken diet for the next 3 days and I slept maybe 3 hours last night.

Every time I hear/read a story of a dog eating something, I am thankful that neither of my pups partake in that activity. I don't know if it is my training or just these two dogs don't care for it, but it sounds like a huge pain in the ass to have to deal with a chewer.

My dog once swallowed a bully stick probably the size of my forearm bone.

The only chews he can have are antlers and hooves.
