Back in my youth, amongst my fellow music snobs, it was frowned upon to buy "Greatest Hits" CDs.

What's FAF's feeling on this? I don't really agree with that statement any longer, as these samplers can be a gateway to a new artist without worrying about getting a "good" album to listen to.

I've been enjoying this new(ish) band Bully, after hearing on XMU that they rocked at SX.

Went on a 90s power-pop binge the other day:

The Merrymakers - Bubblegun
The Semantics - Powerbill
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk
Adam Daniel - Blue Pop
The Grays - Ro Sham Bo

Are all worth checking out if that type of music tickles your fancy.

I do on occasion. Many times, it is cheaper to get the CD from Amazon, which comes with instant mp3 download, than it is to buy the mp3 directly from them or iTunes. And with Prime, no shipping cost either. And saves me having to copy the liner notes on a burned copy I might make of the downloads. Though before we realized this we had bought a bunch on iTunes.

Barry Manilow married a dude...is that surprising? I've never really thought about the issue, to be honest.

There are bands that absolutely will only buy GH compilations. Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, The Cars, et al. Bands where I love like four or five songs out of maybe 8 or 10 albums.

TIL two things Van Halen related:

DLR is in the band today because of Wolfgang Van Halen's insistence; he's actually the one who made the initial call. And Wolfie made the setlist for the 2012 tour.

Wolfgang is more influential to VH today than Alex.

I bought Neil Young and Crazy Horse's last album, Psychedelic Pill, because Neil didn't want it out as an MP3 album on release.

Never got around to learning how to play any instruments. But, I'd love to learn the piano.

I still play my guitar. Considered upgrading to a better one like 4 or 5 times but can't bring myself to do it.

Started playing guitar when I was 10, 32 years ago. (Man.......) Still play almost everyday for at least half an hour. Usually I'll just noodle a couple favorite songs. Don't learn as many new songs as I used to, but I just recently sat down and took a week to learn the Extreme cover of 'Love Of My Life', which was deeply satisfying despite the fact that 'in my day' when I was all powerful I probably could have learned the song in a single sitting.

Oh, and I can also play a handful of songs on the piano. Mostly Van Halen keyboard songs, and a few Beatles tunes.

Nice, nice. I've been hitting drums for about 16 years now. Just realizing how much I need to go back and work on my fundamentals...hand work, stroke patterns, stick grip, (sounds pretty erotic). Went through a bit of a phase where I didn't care much for playing music. Then I was asked to be in a band and it lit the fire back in me.

Play seriously? No. Possesses adequate or above average skill at? Yes. But not performance worthy. On the Piano. I can play the violin like a below-average beginner - I know the mechanics but just not very good at speed. Mostly, I compose.

That's pretty awesome. I don't personally know anybody that writes their own compositions. Should link some videos :P
