Résumés like that definitely have a place where they're acceptable. Like if you are applying to Hasbro to be part of the MLP team in whatever creative capacity. If you're in a creative field, that's fine. My friend that does home video packaging has done ressies like that over the years. The most recent one I remember was she did her ressie on a DVD keep case. She took some random photo of her and her band as a kind of like the one sheet for a 'movie', and the back of the case where the credits would be was her CV. Inside, she had a DVD-ROM loaded with her reel and a pdf of her traditional résumé.

I have a new employee starting a few weeks and need to hire another one. Just one man's perspective on resumes and the hiring process:
If I have to read your cover letter to better understand your background, then your resume is either unclear or incomplete. In fact, If I don't see what I want on the resume, I don't bother to read the cover letter.

The only purpose of a cover letter is to show you give a ****. Agreed--your resume should give me all of the information I need to know. Anything else will be hashed out with a phone screen. I am not sitting here reading cover letters. If I have to read your cover letter to better understand your background, then your resume is either unclear or incomplete. When hiring for an entry-level/lower level position like I frequently hire for, the cover letter means more to me than the resume...but my field isn't entirely specialized...
The cover letter tells me about attention to detail, grammar/spelling, glimpses of personality, etc. ...the resume tells me that they worked as a bartender at two Drinker's locations during college...don't care...
In positions where experience is necessary, yes the resume carries more weight...but for me, I just glance over the resume for just some office experience and general formatting/spelling etc. What I'm hiring for requires consistent ability to format things probably and the ability to pay attention to what you're doing...not being able to format a resume correctly (and by that I mean, consistently...) means you aren't paying attention and/or don't know what you're doing...shift+delete...

That's a good point. For entry-level type positions, where the playing field is a lot more level, cover letters are a great indicator of attention to detail, effort, etc. I work for a transportation infrastructure consulting firm, so not so important for mid to senior-level engineers

Got a call yesterday from a university saying they hadn't received one of my letters of rec and to contact the person asap to get it in. The deadline for the position was a couple months ago, so I'm guessing they're already reviewing candidates. I would imagine they wouldn't even bother contacting me if they weren't at least interested, but we'll see.

In my field, cover letters are fairly important. It's essentially a writing sample in a discipline where writing is a thing. They aren't a panacea, but they can certainly be the difference between the circular file and a follow up call.

Which is why me writing my wife's is funny. She's a highly qualified paralegal and I'm an IT drone. Feds don't even use real resumes, either. In my field, cover letters are fairly important. As woeful as most Fed IT platforms are, USAJobs is a really great platform. It's great having a central resume in a standard format that you can send to any job on the system. Love it.

Nice to see their absurd interviewing process was found to be a complete waste of time so they halted the use of it.

Had a second interview today with a potential client of my employer. It was via web cam and they projected me on a big screen so all 5 people on their end could see me. Weird.

Did you smoke during the interview?

No, went off screen and did a few lines of snuff.

Mrs Dr. c2i is interviewing in Cleveland tomorrow, and it's looking like she will most likely get the job. That means I get to (have to) move to Cleveland. WOOOO. Now I just need to find a job.

I know man... we'll see what happens. She might get the offer and not want to take it, but I highly doubt that. We have nieces and nephews there. She's got a couple of really, really close friends there that I've also become good friends with. It would be almost a perfect fit provided she likes the job, so it's tough to say no.
