It was in the contract that we signed no shots. Also if I wanted a drink neat, they had to put at least one ice cube in it

I think the main thing is, go somewhere where you can BYOB, but hire a legitimate bartender.

We didn't do liquor at all... beer and wine only. No one complained (to our faces anyways...)

No, but how much of a raging alcoholic do you need to be to be pissed that there was only beer and wine offered?do you think people would complain to you on your wedding day?

Yeah we had liquor at our wedding, but I've never had an issue with beer/wine receptions. Who cares? No, but how much of a raging alcoholic do you need to be to be pissed that there was only beer and wine offered?do you think people would complain to you on your wedding day?
On another note, people would actually want shots to be allowed at a wedding reception? Seriously? That is an awful idea that will only lead to really bad things. I'm all for having a good time at receptions but at the end of the day it is a wedding reception, not a frat party.

People are dumb. That's why.

I like taking shots at a wedding
though, in my defense, I'm a very responsible drinker. I just enjoy the fanfare of taking a shot.

If you really want to do a celebratory shot, get together with the groom/bride the night before the wedding (within reason). When you have upwards of 100-200 people at a reception and shots are allowed, chances are at least 5% of said population is going to get really sloppy and probably sick.

One of my older brother's got black out drunk at both his own and another brother's wedding last year and he doesn't touch anything but wine or beer.If you really want to do a celebratory shot, get together with the groom/bride the night before the wedding (within reason). My point is, the people that are going to get "too drunk" will do it without the help of shots or liquor, I think.

But allowing shots makes it that much easier.
We had beer and wine only at our wedding but it was outside and the venue did not allow liquor. I don't understand why people would want to get hammered at their own wedding. If you want to, go right ahead. I just don't see how that would be good for anyone.

This. I had a scotch with dinner and that was it. It was still an awesome day.But allowing shots makes it that much easier.

I did, by accident. Switching from Rum and Coke all night to a bottle of wine did it.Source of the post get hammered at their own wedding.

I don't see a difference between "a shot of whiskey" and "whiskey on the rocks". But I'm a beer drinker anyway.
Honeymoon Cost vs. Engagement Ring Cost
A shot takes less than a second to drink, whiskey on the rocks(I mean I guess you could do it in a second) is meant to drink slow.I don't see a difference between "a shot of whiskey" and "whiskey on the rocks". But I'm a beer drinker anyway.

A shot of whiskey is a waste of perfectly good whiskey, imo.

haha yeah there is a pretty clear distinction in sipping/savoring a liquor drink and downing it in a one-second gulp. Sure, people will get sloppy with beer and wine too, but introducing shots exponentially increases the odds of that happening.

Clear liquor = suitable for shots
Dark liquor that took someone two decades to make = savor that ish

I'll savor 7-15 year stuff.

Exaggerating to make the point; I think I've had 20+-year whatever perhaps twice in my life.

My venue is BYOB. Still not allowed to do shots.

It's pretty easy to end up more drunk than you intended at your own wedding. We had an open bar. No rules, no limits. Everybody handled themselves just fine.I did, by accident. Switching from Rum and Coke all night to a bottle of wine did it.Source of the post get hammered at their own wedding.
At my wedding, when the food came out, we made the mistake of getting up and saying "hi" to every table right away instead of eating our food first. So we basically spent the entire reception dancing, partying, drinking, etc...without an ounce of food. By the time we finished making our rounds and saying "hi" to every table, that part of the reception was wrapping up and it was on to the next thing.
Neither of us got sloppy or even to the point where people could tell we were drinking a lot but at the end of the night when the reception was over, it hit me. I can't count the number of Vodka/Tonics I had. Totally by accident.

I usually get torched at weddings but i plan to go very light at my own. Im sure it won't end up that way though... probably will get crushed in the limo between church and reception
Honeymoon Cost vs. Engagement Ring Cost
Yeah, just about every wedding has 'that guy' who got bombed and made a foo' out of himself; do not let that guy be you at your own wedding. You can get drunk, sure. But not sloppy, throw up drunk.
