- Speaking of which, how many times is it now that this team just been taken completely apart in a national TV appearance over the last few years? Clemson & ND this year, the 2018 ACC title game and the 2018 UPS game were all national network TV games. I believe the last year's loss at VT, the 2018 blowout at UCF, and the 25-point, stupid-ass loss at Miami were all on ESPN. Yikes.

Duquesne will mark the 8th team Murphy has been on since his freshman year of high school. That of course includes Tulane, where he transferred to after Pitt and then bolted to go pro without ever playing a game, but not Washington State, where he asked for a release from his signed LOI to join Pitt instead.

Did some quick research. Last two pitt LB's rated 4 stars were Kazeon Pugh and Dan Mason. Brown is the 13th overall LB and ranked 185th in the class. The other two weren't natioanlly ranked. Mason with the 20th LB and Pugh 22. Ignoring the fact that Mason and pugh didn't really pan out, this is a huge get for the super panthers.

I thought Mason was really good and had an excellent chance at continuing the Gerald Hayes - HB Blades - Scott McKillop pipeline at MLB until his leg fell off.

Instead the Dan Mason Era turned into the Max Gruder Era and we all learned a valuable life lesson in middle linebackers getting praised for their ability to make tackles 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.

I call this the dick tarnstrom effect, in honor of the year when dickie t led the pens in scoring. Even if your team stinks, someone has to lead the team in points. Even if your team stinks, someone has to be the guy that gets the most tackles. For however many years gruder was on the team (it was many years), he was the dick tarnstrom of pitt defense.

I have the same principle, I just call it the Evan Meek Award.

When capel was hired, I'd say that my general mood was a mix of shock and excitement b/c pitt never hires exciting names. There was also a hint of worry because Capel had some issues with a. cheating and b. losing. After year 1, I was still optimistic, after year 2 of seeing the same persistent problems (a zone defense?!?!?!? OH NO!), color me unimpressed.
