I prefer cargo shorts because they give me enough pockets to carry all of the stuff I want to have with me (e.g., wallet, keys, pocket knife, cell phone, CCW handgun). As to whether they're considered fashionable or not, I don't give a flying crap.

In terms of grilling, I have a pair of crappy slip-on shoes that I keep by the door to my back porch, so I'm usually wearing those. I do regularly grill in said back porch while wearing nothing more than boxer shorts and a t-shirt. No one can see me back there anyway.

On that subject, is it ever acceptable to walk outside wearing nothing over one's underpants? For example, say it's 11 p.m., no one is around, you're wearing boxers and a t-shirt because it's the summer and it's hot, and you need to take out the garbage can to the end of the driveway. Do you put on some shorts, or do you just take out the trash as-is?

I make the distinction between front yard and backyard. I let my dog out in the back yard in my underwear, but I wouldn't go out like that in the front to the street.

I typically am wearing athletic shorts around that time, so it's a non-issue for me.

The risk (being tabbed a weirdo who wears underwear in public) outweighs the reward (finding a pair of gym shorts and putting them on)

Same here - either shorts or nothing at all...

Source of the post more important: a neat house or a clean house
Depends on your description of both.

I think a neat house. I really don't believe that you can have a clean house that is cluttered.

everything put away but dust accumulation and messy bathrooms

vs

dusting/vacuuming/bathroom cleaning done, but there are toys, clothes, mail, etc everywhere

i don't want to hear about dust allergies, btw. this is a simple question

Given the two, I'd prefer neat. Our house tends to be somewhere in the middle, mostly thanks to our daughter.

We have a pretty good dynamic at home. My wife can't deal with clothes and shoes strewn about and mail accumulation. And I can't deal with dirty floors and dust. She does the clutter removal, and I do the scrubbing.

I see open counter or floor space and it makes me happy. My wife sees open counter or floor space and she needs to fill it with clutter (until we have someone to visit, then she prefers it clean). So we compromised and have a cluttered house.

I relented and got one of those stupid mail slot things for the wall because my wife would just pile them up on the table or counter. Next up is going to be some sort of shoe cubby, because her and my daughter both leave their shoes downstairs now (likely because no shoes are allowed on the new carpeting).

The only time my wife is insistent on maintaining 'neat freak' status is in the kitchen while I'm cooking ahead of company coming over. Heaven forbid the place looks like someone actually cooked the food we're feeding our guests. It drives me bonkers, because she's been known to throw away live checks that were mixed up with mail on the countertop.

I think I've discussed this in the gear grinding thread... preventative maintenance. I prefer doing the 30 seconds worth of cleaning/organizing/picking up small things here and there rather than waiting until it becomes and issue. My wife on the other hand just doesn't care until it hits a critical mass of messy and then it's all hands on deck to take care of the issue.

I just read through this and yes. I know who not to trust anymore thanks to the cargo shorts debate.

For those against cargo shorts (and presumably also fanny packs), how do you carry around your stuff in the summer? Man bags?

You said you carry a bunch of stuff on you so that's a reasonable scenario to wear cargo shorts. Outside of that, I just prefer the look of the above the knee khaki type shorts.

The last time I wore cargos was in college to sneak alcohol into Beaver Stadium. They eventually caught on when 90% of dudes were wearing the same shorts that everyone made fun of.
