I always had the feeling that they just felt they were in control of everything. I mean sure, we have the ability to delete, but the people constantly getting muted makes people want to talk less. That's easy to say when your forum rules forbid complaining about the mods and allow unilateral post nuking in the event said rule is broached. It was told to me that no one was upset about the modding, and many people reported the bad behavior.*** would have you believe that it was the regulars who complained the most. (He has the PMs)Drive-by moderation doesn't work in this community, imo. You really need to know the temperature of the board, the inside jokes, and of course have some background with the cast of characters to be an effective moderator. Dropping in every 6 months and nuking threads and issuing bans after complaining about how "bad the board" is...won't cut it.Source of the post Well, and a good forum needs mods who are not absentees from regular board discussion. In my opinion, anyway.
Sure, there were times when it went overboard with and against certain people. That being said, often times they (mods) were just unreasonable in the fact that it was hard to disagree with people. I'm more of a sort it out yourself in PM. If it constantly keeps happening, then a mod takes it to PM with all three.
If it happens after that? Warning/Ban. I guess I didn't see the warranted effort to make this a full time job. People are going to disagree and have spats, but it's not in our best interest to mod with an iron fist. You have to trust that people have some kind of decency and sort it out, only after that option expires should you go to the nuke.
