To @realDonaldTrump: I agree that H.R. McMaster (so far as I can tell) has done an outstanding job. I'm sure he'll remain discreet in his statements and loyal to the institution of the presidency after he leaves. You flatter yourself if you believe he wants to be your friend

However, this incident you cite here is no better or worse than the yahoo in the parking lot after the basketball game in my opinion. I specifically cite 'violent criminal activity' because there is a standard for the use of deadly force, and if you're going to show your gun, it needs to be a scenario in which you'd be justified employing the weapon. Your buddy being accosted by an aggressive homeless guy and going for his gun is, to me, only one degree of Kevin Bacon removed from the level of irresponsible conduct that we see in police officers who employ deadly force against unarmed people 'because they were afraid for their safety'. In fact, I'll go you one better: Your friend escalated that conflict, and that's not the purpose of a gun in a self defense capacity.

I'm going to disagree with you on that. The general legal standard for employing deadly force in self-defense is that one must reasonably believe that one is facing the imminent risk of death, serious bodily injury, kidnapping, or rape. It is not necessary for the aggressor to actually throw a punch, pull a gun, or otherwise initiate force. My friend was confronted by a person who was screaming threats of violence, and remember that he also had his children with him. IIRC, the threats were not only against my friend, they were also along the lines of "I'm gonna kill your kids." He showed the gun and the encounter immediately stopped. I believe his actions were entirely justified.

Your reaction would also explain why DGUs might be underreported to law enforcement. My friend believed he acted properly (or at least not improperly). I agree with him and believe it was a justified DGU. But you disagree, as you have every right to do. Let's say my friend called the police to report the encounter, and the police take your view and arrest my friend for something along the lines of simple assault, terroristic threats, or brandishing. He'd almost certainly lose his CCW permit. In PA, simple assault (which includes "attempts by physical menace to put another in fear of imminent serious bodily injury") is a second-degree misdemeanor that carries a maximum two-year prison sentence. Because the law carries a maximum possible penalty of more than one year in prison, a conviction of simple assault would result in a lifetime ban on firearms ownership. A lot of people might reasonably conclude that it's much better to shut up and go home rather than risk being second-guessed by police or prosecutors who weren't there to see what actually happened.

Republicans on the Hill keep trying to reassure us Trump won't fire Mueller. In light of the fate of Tillerson, Dowd and McMaster in the last 10 days, why are they so confident? Wouldn't Congress going on the record against it help?

Its overblown in that it’s utterly meaningless.

10:12 PM last Thursday. Media must have hacked her account and posted false information.

@PressSec
Just spoke to @POTUS and Gen. H.R. McMaster - contrary to reports they have a good working relationship and there are no changes at the NSC

'Christianity as default is gone': the rise of a non-Christian Europe
Europe’s march towards a post-Christian society has been starkly illustrated by research showing a majority of young people in a dozen countries do not follow a religion.

The survey of 16- to 29-year-olds found the Czech Republic is the least religious country in Europe, with 91% of that age group saying they have no religious affiliation. Between 70% and 80% of young adults in Estonia, Sweden and the Netherlands also categorise themselves as non-religious....

n the Czech Republic, 70% said they never went to church or any other place of worship, and 80% said they never pray. In the UK, France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands, between 56% and 60% said they never go to church, and between 63% and 66% said they never pray.

When Billy Graham died, he was lauded for the number of people he brought into faith. It’s still not clear - to me - why that was some sort of societal benefit.

We heathens are worse for the country?
