Is ESPN allowed to talk about this or is the POTUS going after NFL players too political for the delicate sensibilities of sports fans?

It's an intriguing distinction.

I'm guessing the NFL is going to have some good ratings today.

Absurd rhetoric I heard the other day about the healthcare bill:

Obamacare is socialism and the Graham bill is federalism (and therefore not socialism).

Do you want some beer cheese with that pretzel?

Speaking of absurd rhetoric, tweet by a Catalunyan separatist this morning: "I prefer death to living with the atrocities they [the central government] do to us Catalans. We are persecuted like the Jews were by Hitler".

When Apple takes over the U.S. government it will abolish the 5th Amendment. And it will have both fingerprints and facial recognition to identify just about everyone.

"Why is this a fight the president wants to have?"

Good question. My guess: it riles up the left and it makes his base happy. Simple as that.

99.9% sure they have the right to free speech anywhere. Could be wrong though. It’s been a while since I looked at the constitution. Does it make provisions for “on the field” exemptions?

You don't have the right to free speech anywhere. 1A only protects you from government suppression of speech, if that's what you meant.
It doesn't protect employees of private organizations on private property from having consequences of their speech, speaking generally.

I think the distinction is "protesting" at a workplace or at a public ceremony (dependent upon one's job). Many people would be disciplined and maybe fired if they performed a controversial political act at their job site. I don't care if the NFLers take a crap on the flag and wipe their butts with it; certainly covered by free speech. But people who consider the kneeling behavior disrespectful and unpatriotic have the same rights to criticize these players. I'd like to see a boycott by fans who don't like this behavior.
Goodell is a complete hypocrite for calling POTUS comments divisive and disrespectful but pretending these players actions aren't disrespectful and divisive. Opinions naturally vary depending on how a person views BLM, police and our country in general.
I've watched the Steelers and most NFL championship games since the early 60's. The first time a see anyone on the Steelers do something like that I plan on making that the last NFL game I watch. If that happens I hope I don't lose my resolve and watch them in the playoffs.
Where this protesting has shown up is at some military bases. There were 2 examples I recall on military bases (Navy I believe) where military personnel sat during the National Anthem and refused to salute the flag. If they didn't request a general discharge they should have been court martialed an dishonorably discharged.

The original quote was somewhat poorly phrased. Of course someone can lose their job over speech (as it should be).

Beyond that, members of the military give up their freedoms, and therefore the right to do things like kneel for the anthem, while on duty. Civilians aren't held to the protocol.
