Need your help 5af. Just found out I got accepted to give a talk at a conference in Boston mid-August. Wife and I haven't had a vacation in a couple years, and she is trying to defend her PhD in December so we're not going to get a vacation this year, but the conference ends on a Thursday, so I was thinking maybe we can do Thursday-Sunday up in New England (I'm thinking Portland, Bideford area, but open to suggestions). So that'd be a full day Friday and Saturday and then Sunday drive home. We'd likely want to do 1 day walking around the city and 1 day doing some hiking or just checking out the sites. Any and all advice helps. Thanks.

Headed back to Chicago in three weeks.
Can't wait. This is a great time of year to go.
And work is paying for it.

One day is a bit short to soak in everything (obviously) but if you don't mind taking the Orange Line down to Jamaica Plain the Boston Brewery tour is pretty great, and free. You'll get to try whatever weird experimental thing they're working on. Boston Museum of Fine Arts is exceptional if the weather is sour and you want to stay indoors. John Singer Sargent's Japanese vases are there, worth the trip just for that. There are pubs all over the place, be silly to recommend one when it would be more fun to explore and find one on foot.Source of the post We'd likely want to do 1 day walking around the city and 1 day doing some hiking or just checking out the sites.

Oh, I apologize if I wasn't clear. The one day was for Portland or whatever little city we head to for after Boston. We'll have 4 evenings in Boston to do a little bit of exploring.

Oh, awesome. You'll still be able to fill that time pretty easily.
Last time I was there was in 2011 and Hurricane Irene hit. MBTA shut down all of the public transport including the subway and commuter trains. I was on R&R from Afghanistan trapped on the 7th floor of the InterContinental with my wife. It was pretty eerie seeing the empty city below, but there were worse places to be stranded.
That was such a great trip, but the storm put a dent in my activities.
If you find yourself in the financial district during the week and are looking for brunch, I highly suggest http://www.maxsdelicafe.com/ (I know you said evenings, but I assume you're eating other parts of the day as well)

The Sunset on Brighton Ave, not the Sunset by BU. The Sunset on Brighton Ave is awesome, plus never any trouble getting in. If you are in that area, also check out Deep Ellum.Sunset Grill and Tapwent and looked at the menu...Clio Restaurant is one place I'd want to go if visiting Boston.

If you are heading out of Boston, make sure to do so before 2pm on Friday. All roads out of the city are terrible in the summer after 2pm. How far would you want to drive to go hiking? Lots of choices!Need your help 5af. Just found out I got accepted to give a talk at a conference in Boston mid-August. Edit: Also, did you figure out what part of the city you would be staying in yet? Depending on the area, I may be able to give you lots of options for bar food.

i didn't decide where I'm staying yet as I'm going to try to talk my boss to putting the charge on the grant, and if so, I'll splurge a little. If I have to pay myself, I'll go super cheap.

Can't say, as I've never been to Nashville, but that's the first thing that pops into my mind when I hear the city name. Oh, and Sean Brock has a Husk restaurant in town, too.
We're supposed to be getting a hot chicken place here in LA sometime soon. Yay.

It's 10 times better than it looks. And I've only had Hattie B's which arguably is the second best to Prince's. I might just eat it for every meal while I'm there. Is hot chicken as good as it looks?
