I think it's largely a misalignment of taxonomy.... If you think about classifications of animals, you've got Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class Order, Family, Genus, and Species. I feel as though a lot of "that's not a sandwich" folk think sandwich is at the species level... it's probably more an order or family with multiple levels under it.

It's similar to saying "Humans didn't come from apes!" Well... humans are apes taxonomically speaking.
