I'd be surprised if nick gonzales made it over alika Williams.
I also can see Palacios getting a shot. I mean he did have a .400+ slugging % and we don't exactly have a lot of reliable LH bats. Might be a numbers game for him though

Listened to this podcast today. Pretty encouraging review of the Pirates systems. Not really much intrigue in terms of hitters, though the details on Termar were very interesting as to what was driving the high K and BB percentages. Very selective hitter, jumps on pitches down in the zone, but can be beat / will let a pitcher beat him with fastballs up in the zone (I guess that's Trout's profile too).
Shim and Matoma might actually be the most interesting guys to keep an eye on in '24 though.
Also a good discussion on Jared Jones' mound presence.

Njigba dfa'd. I kinda thought they would and it's whatever. I just kept thinking about his strong finish and how every single mid range position prospect failed over the last 2-3 years. He was the last of the group. Guys like Castillo Castro Mitchell Tucker Swaggerty Martin. Couldn't even get like 1 Adam Frazier type out of them.
CSN in September to end last year 80ab .338avg .713slg 6hr.

They shouldn’t have added him to the 40-man when they did. Same with Mitchell and same with swaggerty.
I think the lesson is with these marginal prospects at bat first positions, make them earn that roster spot. Dont add just cause they might possibly get taken. And sabol can play catcher, so not entirely in that mold, guys with defensive versatility are valuable.

He may stink. But he got selected and stuck on the active roster. A lot of guys that were kept on the 40-man ahead of him last winter are gone.
Impact is marginal, but in hindsight, it was the wrong decison

They were added to the 40 man because there wasn't anybody else

O/U in. 74.5. Probably a good number. I don’t feel strongly either way on that

Probably would be best to wait and see how this rotation shakes out until the kangaroo opines on the o/u

My initial thought is under, a step backwards before going forward.MrKennethTKangaroo wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 3:23 pm Probably would be best to wait and see how this rotation shakes out until the kangaroo opines on the o/u
But that number is low, and might seem really low if Cruz breaks out this year.

This team won 76 last year and that was with the month that was April.
I'm taking the under and wondering if they will get back to 70.

I'm expecting over 80 wins this year.
Dodint's Thread of Pirates 23-24 Offseason Optimism
I expect a 15-7 start to delude the hopefuls and then back to hovering just below .500 at the ASB.

They played .500 ball after the break last year with 2 starters.
Endy out, cruz in. I'm in the 78 to 84 win range in my mind

I feel like that last stretch of mediocre play was smoke and mirrors. Reminded me of a year during their 21 straight losing seasons where they finished 30-30 and everybody was ready to hand them the World Series the next year.
Prove me wrong, but I just don’t see one player, as good he may be, overcoming their shortcomings at SP

Not what I said.... i meant anything lost with Endy is likely gained back with cruz. So its hard to see them not performing at a similar level that they did for 72 games.
The starting pitching is no worse. It's almost impossible for it to be. Even the couple #5 starters they added are better than whatever the hell their 3-5 starters were for those 72 games...
2nd half starts:
Oviedo 14
Keller 13
Hill 4
--------
Priester 8
Falter 7
Jackson 7
Ortiz 5
Bido 4
------
Bullpen Games 10 (Selby 5, Hatch 2, borucki 2, zastryzny 1)
In the 2nd half they were 13-14 in keller/Oviedo starts and 22-23 in that mish-mash of whoever the hell else started.

I’m just commenting on the general optimism after their ending last year. It isn’t warranted

There was optimism and the presumption that they would address starting pitching. Then endy and oviedo got hurt, and it’s like why bother now?robbiestoupe wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 2:44 pm I’m just commenting on the general optimism after their ending last year. It isn’t warranted
Also, I would familiarize yourself with what “optimism” means. Saying they have a chance to play .500 and not posting how much you hate the pirates as though it’s a personal affront to you that they aren’t good, is not what I would consider optimism.
Dodint's Thread of Pirates 23-24 Offseason Optimism
Optimism is relative. If you live in certain areas of the world, you can be 'optimistic' that a rocket won't land on your head that day. It's a low bar, but relevant given your personal situation. As Pirate's fans, we live in one of those areas.
