Yeah, my wife was in tears last night as she thought "this is the end..." Thank you for this as it might give her some peace of mind.Ugh. Hopefully everything is ok. Our oldest dog had something along those lines a few years back. We were 100% certain we were going to lose him. That was three years ago and he’s still kicking at 15
He seems to be pretty well back to his normal self today.

We spent 14 hours at an animal hospital and like $3k for the neuro vet to meowshrug us and tells us there wasn’t a stroke. So don’t be shocked if you don’t get a definitive answer

Out Lily had four seizures that we know of while she was with us; when we rescued her she was already on medication to manage her brain chemistry because she'd already had at least two others prior to that. (She was 6 or 7 when we brought her home)
It's definitely super scary to see.

I was most scared for my daughter. She saw it happen and it wasn't pretty. Luckily when I went to talk to her all she cared about was seeing Gomez and making sure he was okay. She had some questions "Daddy, has he done that before?" "Is he okay?" "What was that?" "Why did you want me to not be near him?" but beyond that, she seems okay.

found out today that my cat is in stage 4 kidney failure. We give her the fluids to help, but I guess it is time... She has been very lethargic and peeing all over the house. Not looking forward to this, but I don't want her to suffer anymore.

Oh my gosh, poor critter; that's rough. Hang in there.

Got up this morning and my 5 yr old cocker spaniel seemed lethargic. Ate, drank, pooped, peed like usual, figured she's just not feeling good today, it happens. Threw the ball for her and after a couple fetches she started to collapse, like her legs went out from under her. Called vet, they have no vets today due to one planned day off and the other called off. Keep an eye on her and call back if it happens again. Couple hours later happened again. Waiting to see if they can get her seen or if I have to take her to the emergency vet, which I really don't want to do due to the $200 fee to walk in the door and the multitude of tests that weren't necessary that they did last time she had to be taken there.
I'm just beside myself. I worry it's her heart.

I couldn't imagine our vet turning us away in an emergency situation like you describe. That sucks man. Hope all turns out well.

This one's had health issues for the past few years. She had pancreatitis two years ago over 4th of July weekend and had to be hospitalized. She developed thrombocytopenia due to that and she'd been on prednisone ever since, until they put her on something else a few months ago. Does not seem like the other meds could have a side effect like this. She was boarded over the weekend, I'm hoping she didn't get into something there. Of course, it could just be something totally unrelated to anything.

Dog got bit at daycare yesterday and luckily she was okay. Shaken but unharmed. I expected her to be a bit down and skiddish when she got home. Nope. 3x her normal energy, absolutely flying it.
Now just to see how she is when she goes back on Friday. It's usually her favorite place.

So our vet's opinion was that she could go back on prednisone, which ended up not so good in the past, or get a blood transfusion. So, went to the vet hospital and that's gonna be $800-$1000 in the door and $3-4k for the transfusion. Vet here not sure she needs a transfusion, wanted to do some more testing to the tune of $4-6k which could of course result in, well, she does need a transfusion now we are at $10k.
I told her flat out, I can't afford it. So came up with a couple most likely things to test for, still will be $1600.
It's just a horrible decision to have to make and it sucks. I should have gone home with the "you can go back on the $12 a month prednisone but she might throw a clot or just not wake up" from the get go rather than come here, be out all that money, and I probably still won't know what's going on.
How much is the limit you'd pay to save your pet, especially when all the testing could roll back to- we don't know but here's the bill? I mean this is my dog, my shadow, loves me unconditionally pet. First pet I've ever had that's specifically attached itself to me. I do pretty well for myself but I just don't have $10 grand sitting around for this.
Probably been asked before but does anyone have pet insurance? It would have been worth it for this one, but totally not my other dog and cat.

Yeah, that's just rough. I was going to type out something and then realized that I wouldn't want to even think about putting a dollar figure on something like this, so I deleted it.

Tough call, Ronnie. We had a similar situation that’s documented on this forum. Spent $4k on a 13 year old dog to have a neuro-vet to hit me with :meowshrug:

Puppo’s ok for now. Not her heart or liver and Emergency vet said no need for a transfusion. Got out for about $1500, not bad all things considered although we still don’t know what’s going on.
I did find that if you tell them you can’t afford it the answer’s not- well guess you have to put your dog down. They worked with me on potential solutions and the doc was pretty good. These are things our vet should be able to do.
They wanted to keep her overnight for more blood tests and a chest x-ray to the tune of between $4,000-7,000.

I think the "how much would you spend" question is a feel thing and is case by case. Trust your instincts

Yeah, you already feel awful enough about the situation, generally. There's no need to second guess or beat yourself up.

Re insurance
I for sure would recommend it in the future, if you can swing the premiums. We've only had it for one pet, because the others we've had were either adults/old when we learned about pet insurance, or otherwise uncoverable because of pre-existing conditions or whatever. As our luck would have it, the one pet we were able to cover had by far the smallest amount in medical expenses over the course of her life. So I imagine if we had been able to cover any of the other members of the ohana, the 'expensive' ones, that could've been literally thousands of dollars saved over the course of 15+ years, adjusting for the cost of premiums.
