The 'wild' is a 15-acre pen out in the sound.

Still better than the current location, though.

Lolita was born into a resident pod in Puget Sound in the mid 60s. I don't remember the exact number, but somewhere around 70 or 80 of her pod mates and relatives were captured from the waters off Whidbey Island in a single event in 1970 and sold into captivity; she is the sole survivor of those orcas. Non-partisan efforts of the governments of Washington state and the province of British Columbia have petitioned for her repatriation for around 30 years. When the movement started in the 90s, the then-owner of the Miami Seaquarium rebuffed such efforts saying "I don't want hippies stealing my whale." (Never mind for the moment that orcas are not whales)

This move back to PNW has been more or less finalized since March or April of this year, Irsay is just agreeing to provide (some) funding. I mean, it's not like he's spending the money on running backs.

Seeing Lolita in person in the late 80s is what turned me off on the idea of captive orcas.

No one pays that much for a RB.

Jesus Christ it gets even dumber
Previously called Friends of Lolita, the non-profit organization changed its title to reflect the whale's indigenous name Tokitae, or Toki for short.
indigenous name????? hahahahahahahahaha my god everyone in this story is insufferable

edit: Nooooooo it’s even worse hahahahhahahahahahahahahahahja

Her name is Tokitae, also known by her stage name, Lolita and her indigenous name, Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut.

I'm a big fan of nature, I support animals, I've never killed an animal, I never will kill an animal, my wife loves sea life, she's a diver, and snorkeler and all that ****...

If someone tells me that this whale has an indigenous name, I drive over to the nearest gun show, buy that thing that shoots down helicopters, and I ****** explode that stupid whale like in that old news report and then I take everyone responsible and I mush their stupid face in the remaining whale goo...

No no no...you want to name a wild animal, go right ahead...that's as far as it goes. Stage name, ****** indigenous name, as if it can read and write and you figured it out from the whale's fourth grade homework assignments or some ****...no. I hope the whale eats everyone responsible for any of that.

I can't even root for this to work anymore...clicking the link actually gave me too much information about this, and now I hate it, and I hope a drunk driver with a HAZMAT tank full of whale fuel runs a red light right into that whale's dumb ****** blowhole and kills everyone involved...

It's not a name like you name your pet. Some nations believe they are reincarnated spirits of past chiefs, and the animal holds a spiritual if not religious significance to their tribes.

Who's 'they' in that?
The people who put her in the cage. Probably the same people who thought Lolita was a stage name that "represented a showgirl" and not, you know, Lola.

She was called Lolita because she was significantly younger than her male penmate when she was first taken to Miami. So............. :?

But I'm not sure what you mean by "that's why they put her in a cage". Because local indigenous people had already given her a tribal name, the Seaquarium folks wanted to give her a less mikey-triggering style name?

Well that at least makes more sense than the article MIMH posted.

the local indigenous people didn’t name her until 2018. The first “indigenous” name was from the vet at the Miami Aquarium

I bet the indigenous people are like four white chicks from Boca Raton who found out they have 1/32 Cherokee DNA from their 23&Me test.
