Man, this one is tough. From watching Sportsbeat as a kid to always trying to catch his radio show on ESPN Pittsburgh, he has been a major part of my life. He was definitely the best of the best, not just when it came to sports but as a person. RIP Stan. Love the show.

Stan was the best. Really sorry to hear this. End of the era of sane Pittsburgh sportscasters.
I don’t go to but a few games a season usually but when we walk by the little studio area at the top of section- whatever section it’s in- we always said hi to Stan and he’d always say hi back

Really nice tribute from Pomp:

I wasn't aware of Stan's health problems until I heard him on Madden's show either last week or the week before that. He sounded so unwell, and when I read that he was fighting cancer, I immediately had a bad feeling that the fight was not going well. RIP to a great Pittsburgher.

I first knew him as the TV voice of PSU football in the 80s with George Paterno. Once we got KBL in the Harrisburg area, Sportsbeat was a daily watch. In 2005, I was working the 84 Lumber Classic and my dad came out for the Wednesday pro-am and somehow we got invited in to this dinner with a bunch of media types and we were at a table with Stan & Guy and they couldn’t have been nicer, especially entertaining a few of my dad’s Pirates questions. There’s gonna be a giant hole in the Steel City sportscape with this one.

Prior to Stan getting sick, he would have Guy Junker join him for an hour or two of his show each week. This also coincided with Mark Madden doing a segment on the show. Madden would keep his shock jock antics at a minimum and actually talk sports during the segment, which made for the best sports talk in Pittsburgh. I would eagerly look forward to it every day.

Treat Williams. Definitely a name I know but the only thing he’s been in that I’ve seen is Once Upon a Time in America

Stan was the only sports radio talk show you could listen to for honest, unbiased opinions. He was everywhere and seemed to be loved and revered by everybody. RIP Stan
