This isn't a recent thing, right? I mean he's been on fire since December/late November if memory serves. If Kane hadn't jumped out to a hot start and Crosby been putrid the first month or so of the season, this would be a tight race. Or maybe I'm just not remembering the season correctly.

if Kane gets to 100 there's a 0% chance he'll lose the Hart

Maybe, but if Sid can get 90 points - not unreasonable given the recent pace - it will sure make it interesting.

1. Patrick Kane
2. Erik Karlsson

I hate to say it, but that's my MVP ballot right now...I know EK is going to miss the playoffs, but what he does for that team is historically significant, I can't overlook it...

He's a defenseman that leads the NHL in assists by a clear margin...he's 4th in points...he's got more assists than anyone on his own team has points...

Then I might open it up to someone like Sidney Crosby...or Evgeni Kuznetsov...or Patrice Bergeron...

Ppg broken down month by month....

Oct: 0.45
Nov: 0.83
Dec: 0.92 (1.00 Under Sullivan, 0.80 under Johnston)
Jan: 1.27
Feb: 1.38
Mar: 1.55

So it looks like under Johnston, he was starting to get the wheels moving, but then Sullivan really opened the flood gates for him.

Comparing it to Kane:

Oct: 1.27
Nov: 1.69 (!!!)
Dec: 1.27
Jan: 1.21
Feb: 1.09
Mar: 0.778

Crosby has clearly been the better players since January. Kane just had a super hot start to the season.

Btw, in the time pre/post Sullivan time:

Crosby:
0.68 PPG pre December 12
1.33 PPG since

Kane:
1.47 PPG pre December 12
1.09 PPG since

@count2infinity where did you get the per month stats?

I've been trying to find per month team stats so I could compare our stats from pre-Sullivan to post-Sullivan

I looked them up Kane and Crosby and just did the math. (inb4 NERD!!!)

http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/player.h ... ew=gamelog

Not sure if there's a way to do it as a team.

agh ok.

I wish the NHL had an easy to consume API.

edit: speak of the devil, I found this: http://www.nicetimeonice.com/api

that probably doesn't mean anything to non developers, but this seems to be what I'm looking for. And it's free too, which seems unreal

edit edit: f*ck, never mind, they're just scraping the schedule page, not any box scores, so I can't get any statistics.

What is API
application program interface

probably doesn't mean a whole lot to non-developers, but essentially, the NHL have software devs and stat gatherers. If they wanted to make nerds happy, they would publicly expose their data through an API, so that developers could use the info and make websites/whatnot

instead, sites like war-on-ice.com have to build "web scrapers", which kind of go in to the http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?reportT ... te=0&pos=S type pages and get the useful information out so that it can be easily used by software

slightly related...
NBCSN had a poll yesterday they reported showing Kane 33% and Crosby 32% for Hart. Not that I believe it, but I do remember a season where Ovechkin won the MVP with a late close when he wasn't the scoring leader...

Oh. It was one of their fan votes it looks like - they do that on their NASCAR America show all the time. So nevermind. But the late close has changed Hart voters minds before, so who knows.

I want Sid to win MVP and think he is deserving, but Kane would be the first American to win the award, so that's cool too.

I think that that will/would be a HUGE deal in Canada, but only a foot note here in the states. Outside of Canadian commentators making a big deal of it on tv/net that is. Americans tend to not care if a baseball player is American or Dominican or Puerto Rican whatever. Americans tend to not care if a basketball player is American or European. Americans tend to not care it an actor is from America or Canada or where ever. Baseball does not have an "American only teams" show like Canada does for hockey.

Canadians are VERY "CANADA!" People will be pissed that an "American" won it. I do not think that there is another country with a bigger persecution complex than Canada. It is like the country itself has middle child syndrome.

Well...America has a little bit more on its plate than just hockey. Canada takes a lot of pride in it, it's "their" sport...it's on their money for Christ's sake...

So I would take pride in it too from that perspective. It's their greatest export. They ought to defend it. Like we defend our fundamental right to own guns... :pop: #crossthreadwinner

So Sid is the obvious MVP if the Penguins finish well. I saw on the other board that since a certain date, he's had 22 goals compared to Ovechkin's 21. Given the difference in points - and the fact the Penguins have "turned it around" - Sid is the obvious MVP given how the league views those kinds of things set a few years ago when Sid was winning the scoring race, but didn't win the MVP.
As a matter of principle I don't like the idea of giving the Hart to a guy who mailed in the first half of the season. I know Ovechkin won a Hart that way and I hated it so I should be consistent about it.
