You read #3 correctly. Boston owns that tiebreaker so if they win in regulation and the Pens go 0-1-1, Boston is in.Okay, things are getting a little weird with Boston possibly losing tonight. The magic number would be 1 or 2 if I'm reading the tie breaker rules correctly:
1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
Doesn't matter at the end of the season
2. The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
Pens are at 38, Boston at 37. Let's assume the Pens get OTL or non-ROW and the Bruins win their final game... then they'd be tied
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
This is the one that confuses me... Pens and Bruins have played 3 times. We beat them there, they beat us both times here. If I'm reading this correctly, the two games that are considered are our OTW in Boston and their 2-0 win in Pittsburgh, so they'd win this tie breaker
4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.
If I'm not reading #3 incorrectly and this one matters, then we are currently winning this one

These next 48 hours give the ones who beat their chest about the shootouts more fodder.
In all honesty, if we don't make the playoffs, we don't deserve it. Shootouts be damned.

And if we do make it in, we still deserve it... I don't care what anyone says. Those are the rules, and we then made the playoffs and have a chance at the cup. The whole "I don't even want to see them make the playoffs" stuff doesn't make any sense to me.

Oh, I agree. You earned if you made it and you earned it if you didn't.

Is there an online hypothetical anywhere that shows what the standings would look like if we had 3-point games. (Three points for a regulation win, 2 for an overtime win, and 1 for an overtime loss?)

Long story short, the point system isn't really all that impactful but to inflate everybody's totals relatively evenly.

It can be 1, Boston wins in a shootout while we only get one point. However, 2 is more accurate because we can still get one point and not make it.

Its technically two but for all intents and purposes. Boston would need to win in regulation and net and eight goal differential on the pens. The teams are 2-2 this year.It can be 1, Boston wins in a shootout while we only get one point. However, 2 is more accurate because we can still get one point and not make it.

I thought they only played head to head 3 times this year, with the Bruins winning 2Its technically two but for all intents and purposes. We currently own the 1st tie break by a slim margin, Boston owns the head to head. They've only played 3 times and according to the rules since they played in pittsburgh twice, the first pittsburgh game is ignored. So the head to head is Pens 3-2 OTW in Boston and Boston's 2-0 win in Pittsburgh. That's 2 points for Pens and 3 for the Bruins. The magic number is 2. Win and you're in.

How do people feel about not practicing shootouts now?

if ifs and buts were candy and nuts... or something like that. essentially if we miss the playoffs, I would put shootouts right around reason #3492 why it happened.

It shouldn't really be a focus. I'm not sure how practicing the same moves that never work would help. How do people feel about not practicing shootouts now?

I'd rank the high stick goal that Boston scored in the 1/7/15 game as kind of a bigger deal right now.if ifs and buts were candy and nuts... or something like that. essentially if we miss the playoffs, I would put shootouts right around reason #3492 why it happened.
