Pens D on opening day

I guess most of us agree that the biggest question mark for the Pens going in to the season is their defense. Kris Letang and Olli Niklas Maatta are about the only two players you could safely bet the farm on making the cut - barring injuries, of course (eek!). So who do you think will be in the lineup on opening night?

Let me know if I missed anyone.

I forgot all about Cole.

Those are my 6 with Dumoulin in there as the 7th. (I actually voted Dumoulin forgetting about Cole)

Barring injuries, I don't think Gonchar makes the team unless we want to carry 8 D on the big club.

Does Clendening have to clear waivers?

Yes he does, and so does Dumoulin, if I'm not mistaken. This could mean more AHL time for Pouliot.

I knew Dumoulin did. I don't think you put Pouliot in the AHL. I think you either make a trade or carry 8 dmen. I guess you could risk sending them down early because usually other teams are hoping to keep their players too so they aren't picking up extra players to deal with.

Andersen, Clendening, Erixen, Gonchar, Jonsson, Scuderi.

I expect the worst when it comes to injuries.

yep

I don't see anyone other than Gonchar if he gets signed and Dumo breaking into this lineup without injuries (well, until injuries happen with this team)

I think Clendenning has a great camp and steals a spot.

I'm assuming Pouliot will get hurt during the rookie tourny this weekend.

Everything I've read, multiple places, have Pouliot a 1000% lock to make this team. Even though he is the only one with AHL options, it seems to be the last thing Pens want to do.....even if it means waiving a player.

Letang, Maata, Cole, Pouliot, Lovejoy, Dumoulin, and Scuderi as the 7th. I'd really like to see the Pens just send Scuderi down, but I think they will at least see what he can do this season. If he's awful, I'd expect him to be sent down and a younger guy like Erixon or Clendenning to come up. There are too many players at or very close to Scuderi's level of play for 1/4 of the cost.

I don't see any moves being made on defense until December/January at the earliest.

Yeah, but the Habs tied it. Season over.

Edit: 3-2 Sundqvist. Cup.

Dave Molinari ‏
Penguins D Wardley is helped off the ice after taking hit on outside of right knee. Doesn't look good. Evan Wardley is 21 and is participating in the prospects tournament on a professional tryout contract.

I think coaching staff finally grow a set and scratch Scuderi.

Letang-Maatta
Cole-Pouliot
Lovejoy-Dumoilin

Just need to hope the kids learn and get better while winning games 7-4 is acceptable in the fall and tighten things up in the spring.

For him the tourney means nothing. He has a spot on the roster. Hes probably coasting a bit. Not surprising he has no reason to be at the tournament.

Have you ever seen the quality of play of these things...? It makes the preseason look like game 7...

Pouliot is not the guy that I'm looking to or at in this thing...I've already seen him play in the NHL, I'm happy with his progress...

The "reports" of one subpar sub-preseason game for a guy who has already proven he is at least an NHL regular (and one with top-4 upside to boot) is really not at all relevant to be honest...

Reporting on the reports... just seems like a "why even bother" type of situation.
