the World Wide Web tells me the pens currently have a 41% chance to make the postseason.

a regulation win bumps that to 60%
a ot win bumps it to 55%

a regulation lose drops it to 17%
a ot lose drops it to 33%

I don't like probabilities like that (unless I'm comparing them to betting odds) because they're a little meaningless. of course if we win we are more likely to make the playoffs and if we lose we're less likely to make it

it's like when Amazon tells me that a pass only had a 1% chance of being completed in an NFL game. like ok...that means nothing to me because it actually happened. I can see with my eyes how difficult it was

corsi gives you an idea of how well a team played

probabilities give you an idea of how lucky a team/player got

The point you're trying to make is that playoff probabilities are based on the number of outcomes permutations and don't take into consideration the ability for a team to improve an outcome of a single game in their favor.
