I wonder if there was a conversation, maybe even with Ned or even with Jarry about keeping Ned in...

I remember one time I had a goalie get off to a really tough start...and I looked over to my backup, he got up, he came over to me and said, "I want to go in, but he's probably gonna rebound, he's doing this well, he might still be feeling it actually" - and he ended up going on a Ned-last-night type run...I really appreciated that.
Yes. When you consider his performance after that third goal squeaked past him, it was very impressive. Zero goals allowed in almost 60 minutes, then he held his ground in the shootout. I was a little worried after he appeared injured and the next shooter beat him, but he rebounded after that and stopped the rest.

I for sure thought we were done after that injury

what’s Needle’s career outlook? I’m surprised to see that he only has 109 career games which seems pretty low and it looks like he has the stuff to be pretty dang good

is he seen as a guy whose ceiling is only a high end backup or is there a belief he could be a solid starter?

Ned is such a breath of fresh air to the goalie position for the Pens. Nice to have two capable players plus a bunch of back-up potential goalies to spot start.

I wonder how much that balance helps a goalie like Jarry not feel like he has to play through things that turn into larger issues? That may not have been an issue mentally last year, but Jarry's injury history begs the question in my mind at least.

To tack onto what KC said, Dubas should really be thinking about extending Ned. Cap is going up next year so a say, 2 million dollar backup is a fair deal for him. I’d really like to see him get around 30-32 games this year if we get back into playoff contention

That's about a 50/50 split the rest of the way if he ends up at 30ish games (just eyeballing it).

We have eight back to backs the rest of the way, so those are an easy 8. A lot of 3 in 4, 4 in 6 type setups...so, he shouldn't have trouble getting to 25+ barring anything unforeseen totally foreseen...

I'm not sure he's going to get enough games this year (barring injury) to show he can start somewhere so the best he can hope for is getting a deal like montembault or something to go play somewhere like San Jose.

Might be able to give him some cost certainty by doing 2 years 5.2M or something. Bridge us to Blomqvist maybe.

tbh if I'm Needle, I'm not signing for back up money right now. I continue what I'm doing, look good with the Pens and then I'm sure there's some team that will throw starter money at me in the offseason. Even if it's a dumb move in hindsight, many teams have made dumb moves before

which is a bummer for the Pens because it would be awesome if Dubas could lock him up for a couple more years but at this point I'd be betting hard on myself

I think you're (MIMH) really overselling his value.

He's having a great year, but I would wager most teams would see his performance outside of Pittsburgh and be wary that this is a flash in the pan, especially with Jarry also doing well.

I'm not saying I, if I were a GM, would sign him to a big deal. but I do think there's a GM dumb enough to sign him to a big deal

His performance? Sick #s on a good Canes team as a backup and meh #s on a meh Red Wings team as a starter? All seems fine/consistent/logical whatever to me. Not like he's 34 and been in the minors his whole career either.

He was really good in the first season with Detroit too...don't let the numbers fool you...he's basically been aces in his limited NHL time...but it's tough because some GMs are allergic to 5'11" goalies, so that cuts into the market...and then at the end of the day, it's a 28 year old with 100 NHL games, so how far you gonna go contract wise or trade asset wise with it...?

I mean, I like the kid so far. But I doubt any GM is changing his opinion of him based on these 6 games and also missing half of this season so far.
