Without looking at their salaries, my first thought was salary dump.

Smith is on his ELC, so even with performance bonuses it's $3+ million in savings.

Is Marino so much better or have so much more potential/upside than Smith that NJ had to toss in the extra piece of a 3rd rounder and take on 3m in salary?

I like Marino, but at the end of the day the Pens turned a 6th into a 3rd and a potential asset. The way she goes.

From pens perspective, they took Marinos cap hit and turned it into Smith, Rutta, a 3rd, and 800k in cap space

Smith doesn't have to clear waivers yet, so he'll probably start in WBS. Unless other moves are made before the start of the season, of course.

Absolutely zero chance of that. He's played 114 games in the NHL and 0 in the AHL. Theyre not gonna ruin the kid like that. He's in the NHL top 6

Dude you obviously don't r/penguins or else you would know that the team needs to make space for PO **** J. Pair him with Letang because Dumo is just the worst. Pair him with Pettersson because POJ is an offensive force and MP is a SHUT DOWN defenseman. Pair him with Ruhwedel to ease him into a top six role? **** that. Pair him with everyone because PO **** J is the truth and the future and demands top six minutes over Ty Smith despite Smith playing six times as many NHL games as POJ.
