I have next to no issue with Matheson’s game this season.

I'd say more consistency. He's kinda similar to Schultz, in that he'll show flashes like last night where everything is working for him. Then he'll have nights where he just looks lost and has no idea what he's doing out there.

It's maddening because you can see how good he could be, but it's like a 20% full success rate (with 20% complete failure and 60% somewhere in between).

by his own admission he felt he hadn't been playing well and i've been watching the game long enough to at least have recognized that

below snippet is from yohe's* athletic piece about yesterdays game
"He wasn’t playing very well for the past few weeks. He wasn’t horrendous or anything, but he was blowing some defensive assignments, fanned on a number of good looks and expressed in Anaheim that he was unhappy with his game."

*speaking of which his recent article about matt murray was excellent and im happy to sub the athletic

I've been pleasantly surprised by Matheson for most of the year generally...I don't have a lot of time for players whose best asset is skating, but he's translating it well enough...he's converting it into puck possession for our forwards, we're a heavy pinch team, and we really don't even let our D think about it too much...just skate down the wall and keep the puck alive. Math is really good at playing down hill, and not an amazing processor of information. It's a good match.

Sure all that is fair, but being consistent is something that very very few players possess. And the more skill you add to your game (Math has quite a bit obviously) the tougher consistency becomes. If he were most consistent, he would double his salary.

I haven't noticed Matheson having many particular horrible nights this season. Of course nights like last night are rare, but I think he's been pretty good by and large. Same with - gulp - Pettersson?

Agreed. The only time I’ve noticed Pettersson was the night he took like three minors.

Matheson has exceeded expectations. The only reason anyone has any issue with his play at all is because of his contract.

I don't think you'll do much better on your 3rd pair.
