They built the team to win games 7-5 anyway, im not sure it matters.
They'll lose 4-5 when the power plays dry up.

Zatkoff did fine in 14.
His stats were virtually identical to Greiss.

I was personally never comfortable when either of those guys were in net. Perhaps I got a bit spoiled by Vokoun, but the drop off in quality from Fleury to Zatkoff is quite significant. With the question marks on D, this has the potential to get ugly when MAF sits.

Both Zatkoff and Greiss are fringe NHLers, so you get what you pay for...the good thing is, if Zatkoff proves to be reprehensible, backup goalie is a pretty easy spot to fix...the key is just insulating him, a lot of teams will change their style of play when they have a below replacement level backup goalie in net...if he's still not making the saves he needs to make, then you send him down to the AHL and find someone else...

At first glance I thought you said that the key was insulting him. Really piqued my interest for the rest of the post, only to be immediately let down.

Over the years the Penguins have definitely seemed to play a more responsible defensive game in front of Dany Sabourin, Brent Johnson, Jeff Zatkoff, and Thomas Greiss (not to mention scrubs like Curry and Thiessen) than they do in front of Fleury.

That has been the case, generally speaking, over the years...we trust Fleury will bail us out...we have to be more careful with [backup] because he isn't nearly as good in most circumstances...but that's not the rarest thing...how pro-offense we have been over the past decade is though...but that's neither here nor there...

That would likely be the plan. The succession of things doesn't necessarily go by depth chart. Some players are just backups and some are projected starters. Murray, currently, is a projected starter. So if there is a long-term injury to Fleury, we already know that Zatkoff is not good, so we would likely turn to Murray if no other options were available.

Of course, we could turn to a team like Calgary who needs to figure something out with Jonas Hiller and Karri Ramo pending UFAs and promising Joni Ortio losing his waiver exemption this year...early in the season, they would be in a situation where they would give Hiller a way at 50% if they needed to...

Of course, that won't be the case much later in the season, because they aren't gonna keep three goalies around all year I imagine, but Fleury goes down in the preseason, that's where you might turn, as bad as Hiller is...

Maybe they should sign this guy to back up Fleury.

Make him puke blah!

One of my favorite lines in the movie is "English pig with no brain". I laughed out loud when Fleury said it.

I think Zatkoff will be fine for the 20 games he plays or so.
