Nepotism? Explain to me how Kevin Stevens, Gilles Meloche.............Warren You.........Craig Pat..................

Sorry, that's my phone, I gotta, I gotta take this...
Any idea the average size of scouting departments. Penguins have 22 guys listed in their scouting department, which seems like a lot to me but I also have no immediate comparison. If it's oversized compared to others I have no issues with FOM's since the other 18 guys seem to suck just as much.

Edit: Flyers have 20 scouts listed but keep their version of FOM as Advisors. Rangers list 16 scouts. Leafs list 20. I don't think our FOM nepotism hires are necessarily the issue here versus the other turds we employ.

Some teams are down around 8. Some teams are up in the 30's (Toronto). Some teams "carry" a bunch of bird dogs too, some are like on commission part time guys, some get benefits and the whole bit (Rangers)...

2021 draft class...

Tristan Broz (LW/RW) - It's tough because he's very technically skilled. He's got great hands and they're getting better. He can skate. He's smart. But I really question his interior skill. I'm not sure about his ability to score goals at the pro level if I don't see his interior game improve because I don't think his shot is deadly by any means. All of the fancy stuff he does seems to track outwards or be on the edges. His game inside bothers me. This is one where I can definitely see it working out - he's a great test for me. Because this kid can play, but I think he's a bit of fool's gold.

He can't control his schedule, but people looking at his production, you should be careful...

5+2=7 against a terrible Miami team (including a 4 goal game recently), six points in two games against newly-minted (and the worst team) Lindenwood.

So, without digging too deep. That's 13 of his 20 points in six games against two teams who are playing .200/.300 hockey.

Four games against #6 St. Cloud - no points, four shots.

I don't know. He needs some help. In terms of technical skill, I'm not sure that we have anyone better...it's just the application of it.

Isaac Belliveau (LD) - The production is up, which is nice, of course. But I'm not sure his game is much better. Skating looks a touch better than it did last year, so that's nice. I wonder if he's in better shape. I had questions about his conditioning when I saw him last year. His defensive game looks pretty bad still. Defensive positioning in his own zone is rough. He stops moving his feet too much during rush absorption. A little better - maybe - at using the defensive blueline to his advantage. But he's still got a lot of work to do without the puck. He has some talent though. Hasn't scored in his last three (including two games where his team scored 11) and that dipped him below a point per game for now.

As dumb as it sounds, I kinda like where his G:A ratio is going. Gatineau is a deep team with a lot of NHL picks. They should go on a deep run this year, it'll be interesting to see where Belliveau's game is at come playoff time.

Ryan McCleary (RD) - Whoa, boys...we might actually have something here. I had a hard time getting a read on him last year, but he looks like a really well-rounded player now. His puck poise, puck protection, retrieval game is really impressive. Plus shot certainly. He can defend well. Plays with some jam. He's really coming along nicely under Mike Johnston - and I know that doesn't make people feel good here, but he and the Winterhawks have been a defense factory over the years...

Seth Jones, Matt Dumba, Henri Jokiharju, etc.

I'd like to take a deeper dive on him later in the year, but he jumped off the page to me.

Daniel Laatsch (LD) - I mean, whatever, I'm not gonna spend a ton of time here because I have some decent knowledge of Wisconsin already...they're a mess. Laatsch is still a big guy that can skate, he's a defensive guy, he's not talented, he's not a very good passer, and he's not really physical for some reason. He's one of the better plus/minus guys on the team at -3, but he just doesn't produce at any level. 8 points in 56 NCAA games is not anything. Rob Scuderi had 24 as a freshman (and ten more as a sophomore)...Dumoulin had 22 as a freshman. Laatsch has 5 as a sophomore. 5.

Kirill Tankov (C) - Played one minor pro game this year and was seriously injured. It's too bad...he was probably going to be in the running for our best prospect.

Nathan Legare is basically putting up the same numbers as he did last year and they're underwhelming.

He's been a real disappointment...I was hoping for like, I don't know...Ruutu would have been sweet...or even that, uhh, what was that French Canadian dirtbag that did a lot of cheap stuff but never fought...? I think we might have even had him for a year or part of a year...I forget...

Not technically our prospect, but the Baby Pens signed Jagger Joshua from Michigan State...super unskilled worker bee, but plays hard, big hitter, strong name...brother Dakota plays for Vancouver...

Swift Current's season is over. Meaning Owen Pickering is free to roam...he'll join up with the Baby Pens on an ATO.

Went 9+36=45 in 61 games (4th on the team in scoring, 1st among d-men). So of those points were on the PP (19 assists).

Among 2004's, here's his points rank among WHL d-men...
Korchinski (Chi, 7th ov.) 73 pts
Mateychuk (CBJ, 12th ov.) 65 pts
Cagnoni (2023) 64 pts
Pickering (Pit, 21st ov.) 45 pts
Slepmann 43 pts
Mayo 42 pts
Parker (2023) 38 pts
Lindgren (Buf, 106th ov.) 34 pts
McCutcheon 33 pts
Kmec 32 pts

Taking this here, because it's two players that won't play in the NHL...
Caulfield: As if we need any more lessons in not drafting players who play bottom six when they're in junior. Even if he tops out at Zach Aston-Reese or whatever his highest ceiling is, I'm always going to make a frowny face at just unbelievably unimaginative picks. There's no excuse. There's 50 guys at that point in the draft that I'd take a chance on. And even if you say, "well, that's was our U.S. guy's pick...so, it's not like you're gonna take Yegor Savikov or some such..." ok fine...Patrick Moynihan on that same team wasn't gone yet, Aidan McDonough is in the same league and everyone knew who that was, I had Parker Ford as a 3rd round guy or so that year, same with Jami Krannila...and this isn't even retrospect pulls, it's out there. I said this at the time, the situation hasn't improved.

Nickl is the defense version of Judd. He's not a very good skater. He's not very skilled. He has average hockey sense. He's pretty tough to play against. Nickl specifically isn't super athletic. So his physicality doesn't translate into anything that makes it interesting before there's a limitation on that. Looking at his ice time, it must be playoff time in Sweden because he went from playing 17, 18 minutes down to 4. So, you kind of know where you stand there. I don't know, at times, it looks like he's a sentient marionette puppet...it's like, there's intent, and then there's the action, and then someone from above pulls the strings and makes it go a little bit out of control, and then his body takes over again and gets him back on his feet...it's bizarre. I don't think this is a player either.
