GDT Pens vs Isles Game 5

We played an incredible game imo. And it means jack sht

Only sport where you can dominate the game and lose. Why? Because of goalies, bounces, puck luck. This can’t happen in Football or Basketball.

The “luck factor” in hockey always makes Wins and Loses seem somewhat random.

By some chance this team advances (which will only occur if Sorokin completely falls apart), the prospect of a rested Bruins team sitting and waiting for them doesn't augur well.

They outshot the Islanders by double and largely controlled possession in the game. They lost because their goalie **** sucks.

Yeah, we played a hell of a game, no doubt. Deserved better and might have...but you give up bad goals and you lose games and series as a result. That's the deal. A bad goal erased a whale of an effort. It's gonna take a lot of mental fortitude to get two more games like this out of this group, but we'll see...

Sid - 13 GP, 6 points
Geno - 11 GP, 7 points
Letang - 13 GP, 6 points
Jake - 13 GP, 5 points
Rust - 13 GP, 6 points
McCann - 10 GP, 3 points

Goaltending has been awful since Fleury was sacrificed, but the entire team has sucked ass and is apparently out of ideas or give a shits when it comes to generating offense. HCMS is gonna be assuming that Ned Stark position...

The Pens literally outplayed the Islanders for all but maybe 30 seconds of this game, and those turnovers in those 30 seconds cost them the game.

It's a **** shame the goaltending is buttcheeks.

This series should be over. 4-1 Pens.

Instead we're down 3-2 because of bad goaltending. Letting a softie dent the twine every once in a while is part of the game. But that OT goal... wow.

OK, please bear with me.

Remember Tampa 2016. Some of us were sure the Pens were toast after game 5 when we went down 3-2. Just like with this Isles team, every bloody isolated mistake ended up in our net. The Lightning waited and waited and when they got their chance, they buried it. They had all the mo. We couldn't solve Vasilevskiy...until we did.

We can't solve Sorokin once again (we've done it before) until we do.

"But this Pens team isn't as good as that one." We had an untested rookie goaltender who had his shaky moments and bad games. We had injuries up and down the lineup, as it was the 3rd round. We had a few passengers when we needed secondary scoring and people to step up.

Three weeks ago, we were all waxing nostalgic about how this team DID remind us of 2016. It was--IS--good enough. Today, I said in the Pens randomness thread that I didn't want to go 3-2 like in 2016--not that any of us did. Here we are. No choice now.

If this team really has any 2016 in them, then we'll find out on Wednesday.

Past can be prologue. We've all seen incredible comebacks from 3-0, 3-1 across the league over the years. Tonight, along with the 2016 Pens, I'm thinking of the 2014 L.A. Kings over the Sharks (2010 Flyers over Boston whatever). And the Acapulco Cliff Diving Championships.

That whole sequence started with a not even half hearted keep in attempt by Malkin at the other end.

It's apparent that the Pens are going nowhere at this point with our current goaltending situation. It's a shame, because this is definitely the deepest team we've had since 2016.

I liked the part where 2 scrubs were allowed to tackle 2 of our best players behind the net and it was impossible for the referees to determine if that’s legal. No way to tell!

Sports are dumb, including hockey. When that happened I remembered, “ah yes, there’s no point to the prior 6 months because a bunch of stupid sh*t happens and nobody knows what they’re doing when things start mattering.”

And yeah Jarry...that’s a normal thing to do there.
