He doesn't do drugs. He breathes in the life force of opposing players.

Dude needs to keep his head up or he took the hit to make the pass.

I think the issue is the distance he was from the boards. Closer or further away and nobody has an issue. I'm fine with it, personally, though it's probably borderline if I remove my bias.

yeah it's an unfortunate position and thankfully Nelson didn't get hurt from it

The hit is fine. When did NHL players stop learning how to take a hit? In a half-assed attempt to avoid the hit, Nelson puts on the brakes leaving himself flat-footed, his left foot anchored, weight on his heels, and all momentum stopped 5+ feet from the boards. Someone who isn't a moron continues their forward momentum and meets Tanev for contact to minimize the blow or adjusts their momentum toward the boards to turn Tanev's effort into a run of the mill body check.

that's like doan-on-letang. for the hit to matter in a bad way, you'd have to sprinkle in a heavy dose of bad luck. i'm fine with it. sometimes guys fall weird, but in almost every version of this, nothing happens to Nelson here.
Tanev is wild...if I wake up groggy my day is ruined and i'm half useless. this guy goes to work every day no matter what. i can't express how much respect i have for people like this.

The threat of Tanev plastering him is what caused the turnover in that sequence. If Tanev doesn't finish his checks, they make an outlet pass. Learn how to take a hit imo

Skills ebb and flow as the game and players evolve...like I say in the history conversations, the game just doesn't progress linearly...players lose qualities over time, they may gain others, they may reach a plateau and "lock in" certain skills or skill sets...
Depending on your development track, you may not have been exposed to that hit...Quebec kids could easily not have seen that hit...while Minnesota high school kids may be ready to initiate that contact there...I use that example very specifically, as Brock Nelson is a Minnesota high school kid and he ate it...he's also not used to make a defensemen's retrieval and outlet there, to be fair...
This is why development is important and not only having the right coaches, but the right players around, veterans that have seen it all and can identify things like that and go, "Hey, when this happens, you can do this...or this, if he's doing that"
This is a macro, general answer to a question that wasn't really asked...

to me the physicality of the hit is fine and Nelson was just a little surprised by it. That's fine. NHLers get checked all the time; they can't lower their shoulders at all times
I think the crux of the point of posting the hit is where it is on the ice. It's in the "boarding" zone (as NTP said, any other location and this is just a good hit). That's the point of the discussion imo. Tanev (and Nelson) lucked out that Nelson went into the boards fine so ultimately that's why this was a no call and no one really cares. We probably shouldn't judge the hit based on the outcome but whatever

they didn't luck out. significant bad luck would have been required to turn that into a thing.to me the physicality of the hit is fine and Nelson was just a little surprised by it. That's fine. NHLers get checked all the time; they can't lower their shoulders at all times

I like the hit and want Tanev to do it. But yeah if things get unlucky they'll call it boarding.
