Wut. Does that mean he got hurt in warm-ups? It's not like you're a game time decision testing things out and realize you have a high ankle sprain or something. Weird
Concussion probably

You can add Brendan Witt, Adam Oates, Chris Simon, Dale Hunter, Craig Berube and Joe Juneau to the list of dirty Crapitals.
I don't remember Adam Oates playing dirty. What did he do? Just curious. All I can remember about him is that he would never shoot. He was a pass all the time guy.

That’s a boarding call. It should have been a minor, but Tinordi going in so awkwardly and being visibly in distress elevates it to a major and a game. IMO.

He took four strides at 1.5x speed to make the hit. It was glaring when I watched a video of the replay
The guy he hit had the puck... up until 1/4 second before he hit him. Not even 1 full stride post release.

Skating to catch a guy with the puck and hitting him is not charging.

That hit happens 30x a game. Not tanevs fault Tinordi is a big oaf who trips over his own two feet. Probably why he's been riding a bus for 10 years.

from the rule describing boarding:

"However, there is a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position."

Caufield summed it up last night post game imo.. you don't expect a guy that much bigger than you to fold that easily and fly six feet.

Epically bad take. Even the homer Boston announcers said it was a clean hit.
MIMH is taking the NHL video game version of the penalty and replacing the actual use and interpretation of the rule with it...

So is Tanev automatically fined $200 (lol) and pending suspension?

boarding call...because he was vulnerable? i don't get it.

The official wording for boarding is
A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or
dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
By letter of rule, this is boarding, but like... how many times is that actually called boarding?

This also implies if you level a dude in the middle of the ice and he slides into the boards, you should be assessed a boarding penalty, which doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

I don’t think vulnerability plays into it. You can be vulnerable anywhere on the rink. Tanev launched him into the boards.

Since there isn't a stupid hockey questions thread, do all major penalties (besides fighting) come with game misconducts now?

one thing I learned last night is that by the rulebook's definition, boarding and charging are both very, very vague. They depend heavily on precedence

you could argue, by the letter of the law, that anytime someone checks someone else into the boards (as long as it qualifies as "violent") that it is boarding

There are two guys on the ice to interpret rule book and apply it based on the temperature of the game.

losing both Geno and Tanev mid-game was really bad. We had more fourth liners in our forward group than non-fourth liners toward the end

it wasn't a text book penalty, but i'm not averse to penalizing hits like that because they always end ugly. i actually think the wrong guy is gonna get lit up on one of these and we see a push to change the rule book to not being able to hit a guy as he's in the middle of that kind of follow through in that spot or something.

because it's just one of those icky kinds of plays.

...but i still think they blew the call - given current rulebook

The entire rulebook is vague, bud...boarding, charging, roughing, slashing, cross checking...they all exist as varying degrees and it all must be considered at live speed...hell, even high sticking is not automatic...that's why they have trained judges on the ice to decide...

It's not a dumb question. There are tables in the rulebook that answer this question indirectly...like, boarding and charging are not automatic game misconducts. If there's an injury to the head or face, then it becomes a game misconduct situation...but if you board a player so hard, but he's a slinky, and he lives, you can be assessed a major and leave the penalty box after five minutes and continue to play...
