OFFICIAL GDT Game 29: Pens vs Bruins
One thing that makes me apoplectic is when neanderthals complain “you can’t even hit people anymore!!!!” after a penalty is called on that hit. Most of us agree it was the wrong call, but for the sake of player safety I don’t think it’d a horribly egregious call
The NHL (and NFL) have a significant crisis with former players literally killing themselves because they can’t deal with the after effects of playing the sport. Checking isn’t being legislated out; violent, unnecessary checking is. The NFL did go too far in the opposite direction with ridiculously over the top protection of quarterbacks but the NHL is more likely to miss a call rather than over-call things

Ryan Whitney, former NHL player for a decade, claimed it was the worst ice hockey call he's ever seen. tanev hit on 3/16 - penalty
tanev hit in game 4 of the SCF - not a penalty
...this is a nuance of it as well. I think Tanev got dinged in part because the refs were like, "why now, bro? what's the payoff for this hit?". I don't think that's a conscious thought but I think when it's a humdrum Tuesday game in March the intensity of the hit being >>> the intensity of the stakes might influence what's called.

here's the deal. call it a minor and everyone goes well I don't know about that and whatever.. we aren't even discussing it today. call it a major, review it and uphold it? trash

I'm sorry but as someone who has been involved in hockey in some way or another for my entire waking life, it's tough to swallow that "hitting a guy too hard" is a major and a game misconduct.
Tinordi was 6-8 feet from the boards. It's a physical sport. Be prepared to absorb contact and you won't go flying like a little dodint.
Bad precedent here.

Bottom line, that's a 2 or a 0 if Tom Wilson hadn't attempted to decapitate another player on that team 10 days ago.

You have to at least entertain the notion that this was just pure incompetence. The thread line to me is just poor performance from an increasingly inept team of officials.Bottom line, that's a 2 or a 0 if Tom Wilson hadn't attempted to decapitate another player on that team 10 days ago.

It's actually impressive that they managed to top that tripping call on Pastrnak

I thought the Pastrnak tripping call was fine but the first two calls (Pastrnak got called for something else and Geno "holding" a Bruin on the PP) were just terrible calls
