Mark Recchi & Frank Pietrangelo 1991 playoff used sticks

Postby AuthorTony » Fri Dec 11, 2020 4:01 pm

I'm in the process of remodeling and need to get rid of a bunch of things that are just taking up space in closets. I have two sticks, one from Recchi and one from Frank Pietrangelo from the 1991 playoffs, that I'd like to send to a better home. Any idea what they might be worth?

Market is pretty volatile for these types of things...I think goalie sticks (like enforcer game used jerseys) are a slight specialty. A Kunitz game used Final stick went for $200 recently. Probably the floor for Recchi.

Pietrangelo's floor is probably around there too if I had to guess but the market is much more limited. No chance it's "the save" game, right? If you can photo match it to that game, I bet it's worth at least $500 if you can reasonably "prove" it, I'd say more like $800 actually. That's a historic moment in hockey history...it expands your market...

I never really considered that it could be from that game, but now you have me wondering. ha. I watched the crappy yt videos and tried to match it up. Def the same brand and coloring of stick, and the tape pattern looks the same, but I imagine a goalie's going to use the same model (not nec. the exact same stick) all the time, right? Here's some pics of the stick and some yt screenshots.

Yeah, I think the tape comes down a bit further on the yt shots than on the stick I have.

Do goalies pretty much use one stick per game, assuming it isn't damaged?

Goalies keep the same stick for a while...they wouldn't change sticks mid game without damage...

Ha - I didn't see that, sorry! I would have no idea at all how to ship a stick though.

You can just wrap it in like a shipping bag basically...I just got a goalie stick shipped to me and it was just wrapped tight in a protective-y plastic and then like a shipping wrap (same material that you would put a bolt of fabric in to ship it...though, I guess that's not a very relatable thing)...but, ultimately, it was plainly obvious it was a goalie stick...

@Mikey might know this. How do the puck burns on the stick look? Dark enough for pro players? I only ask because my roommate in college was a goalie. He had the opportunity to practice with the Nailers a couple times and was able to show me on his odds where pro shots hit him vs where college guys did. He basically said it’s a whole other level even ECHL vs college. The stick was clearly used in a game, but at what level.

You roomed with @meow in college...?

I'm going to uncharacteristically defer here, because I wasn't a loser ass goalie...pre-supposing that meow actually got hit with any pucks, he actually has first hand knowledge of that exact transition I believe...

Most of the time, puck marks are related to the quality of puck. A&R pucks leave a black/brown color mark. Inglasco leave a solid black mark.

As far as the quality of shooter being a driving force between the type of mark being left behind. I'm not really sure about that. Depending on the level of college hockey, the shooting difference may be huge; it may be minimal. Like if he played ACHA D3 then went to ECHL - yeah I'm sure there is a big difference there. But between NCAA D1 and ECHL - not a huge difference as far as velocity goes. As you step up level by level, the big difference is the speed at which plays are made and how "small" guys shoot it. Shooting it small means it gets off their stick a fraction quicker. It is flatter. It is a few inches more accurate. The velocity difference is negligible for the most part.

Edit. Also, I don't have any experience yo-yoing between levels. I basically started each year at a level and stayed there all year, so my gear got universally beat up as the year went on so making comparisons was more difficult

Don't act like your muffins would mark up goalie gear.

I don't hit the goalie gear...it's all deflections and five hole shots...

Once every six games that I get loose near the net...
