Quick game too. Made it through a timeout and more than half of an overtime and the game ended at 9:30 sharp...

That's about as difficult a 17 save shutout as you are going to see.

I watched the highlights on dtmts.com, and it was 99% Pens. I saw probably 2-3 saves where Jarry looked amazing (kick save while on his belly, for one).

Jarry may wind up making Murray expendable.

Expendable? No way. You still need good back ups in this league. Now more than ever. Which is what Murray is now. A 1B

Yeah, you really need two NHL goalies right now...

Games played and workhorses are just not what they used to be...I've heard about 63 is the upper limit to where you can have a guy right now...and you still need to get points in those other games...see: Montreal. Carey Price is 13-9-3...and before coming back to beat Ottawa the other night, his backups had a combined one win in six starts...Kinkaid was sporting a 4.24 GAA before being dunktanked...they now turn to 20 year old Cayden Primeau to just give Price a chance to breathe as he had played 25 of 31.

Same thing in Toronto. Freddy Andersen is 15-8-3. His backups are a combined 0-6-1. Hutchinson has been waived once (4.55 GAA), Kaskisuo stinks...Andersen has played in 26 of 33 including a back to back just recently because the Leafs now have to chase a playoff spot...

Last year:
Dubnyk 67 GP - missed playoffs
Price 66 GP - missed playoffs
Hellebucyk 63 GP - Out in first round

2018:
Hellebuyck 67 GP - West Final
Talbot 67 GP - missed playoffs
Andersen 66 GP - Out in first round
Bobrovsky 65 GP - Out in first round
Vasilevskiy 65 GP - East Final
Quick 64 GP - Out in first round
Lundqvist 63 GP - missed playoffs

2017:
Talbot 73 GP - Out in second round
Andersen 66 GP - Out in first round
Dubnyk 65 GP - Out in first round
Jones 65 GP - Out in first round
Rask 65 GP - Out in first round
Bobrovsky 63 GP - Out in first round
Holtby 63 GP - Out in second round

The expected result is that good goalies play a lot. Therefore, it's expected that they make the playoffs (over 50% of teams do). Of these 17 instances, four missed the playoffs all together. The rest won a combined six series (6-14).

Meanwhile the last Cup matchups:
Binnington (32 GP) vs Rask (46 GP)
Holtby (59 GP) vs Fleury (61 GP)
Murray (49 GP) vs Rinne (61 GP)

To elaborate on this a little further, only two goalies in the post-lockout era have won a Cup while playing more than 60 games: Fleury in 09, Quick in 2012. Any goalies prior to that time are HOF level (Brodeur, Hasek, Roy).

More on goalies and load management...

Stanley Cup winning goalies in GGP since the big sleep...
Holtby - 17th (54)
Murray - 27th (49)
Murray - 67th (13)
Crawford - 16th (57)
Quick - 21st (49)
Crawford - 21st (30)
Quick - 4th (69)
Thomas - 16th (57)
Niemi - 34th (39)
Fleury - 8th (62)
Osgood - 30th (43)
Giguere - 18th (56)
Ward - 47th (28)

##

...and specific to workhorse Brodeur...

Brodeur GP -> playoff success
2007 (78 GP) -> ECSF loss
1996 (77 GP) -> Failed to qualify
2008 (77 GP) -> ECQF loss
2010 (77 GP) -> ECQF loss
2004 (75 GP) -> ECQF loss
...
[removed sub-40 game throwaway season, let's go full-time starter]
1997 (67 GP) -> ECSF loss
2012 (59 GP) -> SCF loss
2011 (56 GP) -> Failed to qualify
1994 (47 GP) -> Wales Conf. Final loss
1995 (40 GP) -> Stanley Cup Champ

He went to the SCF five times...those seasons he was: 6th, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd and 14th in GGP...

He led the league in GGP six times...in those six playoffs, he won a combined one round. He beat Johan Holmqvist in a playoff series.
